Thomas Edison’s house was absolutely breathtaking to see! It’s been on my list for the longest time. It was beautiful to explore outside as it was in the inside, where pictures and filming is NOT allowed and for good reason. It is definitely worth touring inside! I went on National Public Lands Day, which was free admission and no reservations needed for their open house that day, but on a daily schedule… I recommend if you’re going to go, you SHOULD reserve ahead on the site. As you go in, you will feel like you’re taken back to time in the 1880s, just like the furniture there, which are nearly all original from the time Edison purchased this home. There are so many rooms to tour and so many details to see. My favorite thing in the house was seeing all the original artworks displayed. I would LOVE to go back again just to see it all again, since I couldn’t take any photos, so I can remember it all again. You can however tour inside Edison’s greenhouse and you can’t miss seeing the Crown of Thorns plant that has been there as an original ( been there for the last 100 years). You can also walk around outside in his yard. All so peaceful!!!

Thomas Edison’s estate in Llewellyn Park, West Orange is open for tours several times a day on weekends. Sign up online. Pick up passes at the Thomas Edison visitor center. The tour is free with admission to the Edison Laboratory. Tour lasts 30 minutes and the ranger was knowledgeable and interesting. Much of the furnishings are original. No photography inside. There is also a carriage house with several vehicles including two electric.

While a beautiful home and interesting tour it was very very short. You get about 30 minutes in the home and you’re restricted to the first floor. For a home that has hosted many historic people and so many events things just felt very rushed. Because of its quick timeline the details you get in the tour are very minimal. I wasn’t very impressed, and honestly I was disappointed.

My husband and I went here years ago, and it still sticks in our memory. We first toured his factory and then walked through his huge home. The attention to detail on the staircase alone...wow! The tour guide explained what each room was used for, including the waiting room for guests. Sadly, the historical society wasn't able to raise enough funds to upkeep the whole estate. It is worth seeing as it is one of the most unique estates we have seen so far and gave us inspiration for decorating our home...
