Zero handicapped accessibility! There is not one single accessible seat in the entire stadium...not one. There is, however, an entire row of floor seating the length of the stadium for high rollers. But no seating for disabled.
The stadium sold us "handicapped" tickets, but the seats were not accessible. What they have done is slap a blue wheelchair emblem on the front row of bleacher seats and call them handicapped.
NO WAY ARE THEY ACCESSIBLE! A wheelchair or a walker cannot access these seats. To get to these seats, one must climb a knee-high step...unsafe for able-bodies people let alone disabled people.
I spoke to UNCW Athletics Director, Jimmy Bass. He suggested that my husband could sit in his wheelchair or a folding chair in the aisle between the bleachers and the high-roller seats.
Completely impossible! There is simply not enough room to accommodate a wheelchair in that aisle. We could not park the chair face forward. We could only fit it sideways into the aisle. The same for anyone sitting in a folding chair...not enough room.
Anyone sitting in that aisle would completely block the exit for that entire side of the stadium...a serious fire and safety hazard for the entire stadium.
In the attached photos, you can see the so-called accessible seating on the raised platform. You can see how the scooter parked sideways nearly blocks the passage for that side of the stadium. You can see there is not enough room for anyone to sit in that aisle in either a wheelchair or a folding chair.
UNCW, this is not only shameful. It is illegal. You MUST provide wheelchair accessible seating that does not endanger the disabled person or the rest of the stadium. That is the law. Elimination of some section of the bleachers or some portion of the high rollers seating would provide room for...
