This is a rating of both the outdoor display and the inside of the gift shop building while it is still in the process of completion. I went here yesterday, for the first time and the gift shop itself is very small but filled with activities, information and alot of merchandise for sale. I especially enjoyed a display within the gift shop that showed the exact imprints of the size of Vollis Simpson's hands. It was on a plexiglass covered white table and you can place your hands over an actual replicated imprint of his hands. My hands are not very small but in comparison to his, mine appeared tiny. Around the register there were bits and pieces of the original whirligigs that didnt survive the elements through the years. I was surprised to find they had somewhat cleaned them up but left the rust and odd plant life that had corroded and clung to the random pieces. I had no idea that one of the whirligigs was named "The time Machine". I love that. I'm smiling right now- the next day thinking about it. Pardon my slang but "that's dope AF" I loved this place. Yes bring the children, yourself, your friends, your parents and grandparents because this place is totally awesome and incredibly fascinating especially if you are at all into mechanics or engineering. I had no idea about the actual life story of how the "whirligig" came to be until visiting this place. I had no idea of his life or his absolute passion in making these art installations. I did not include any images of the actual gift shop because I was too shy to ask and I personally find it rude and disrespectful to photograph specific things without asking. Part of the shyness was the mystical overtaking of the items and I didnt want to ruin the surprise by showing off everything because whoever you are, reading this, please just go and see...
Read moreThis quirky and fun little walk through brought me so much joy. I would recommend going on a windy or slightly stormy day. I would also recommend brining sun glasses. The history of Wilson and the locals who are passionate about it are simply pleasant. The gift shop staff, the visitor centers staff, the bar tenders and the vendors are just so fun and easy to talk to. Whether you’re going with family or on a date this is a great way to pass the time. The whirligigs are best for kids 6-13 and there’s a little space to run around. Not a ton of shade but there is some and it’s totally worth the stop.
Last thing: this town is crazy affordable. For real. My person and I had 2 full meals, several drinks, and bought a couple gift shop items and didn’t break 100. The food in Wilson is awesome.
Make your Whirligig visit a day trip. Couple of things from...
