During my most recent visit to Winter Garden, having had a friend over from Europe, I have decided to visit Winter Gardens Heritage Museum.
This place consist of 2 small rooms, if I don't count the front desk... There is not much to be seen there, but I just had the most BIZARRE experience with the man who works there and who, one would assume, is supposed to welcome and attract tourists to this museum.
Although he was not aware an item I was curious about is even on display, he took the opportunity to lecture us on how we are not supposed to get our news from CNN, but instead stressed that we should really start reading the BIBLE .
Our faces grew long, as we listened in disbelief, as he continued his speech praising Trump, just a minute after he gave us some brief information on the end of segregation in Winter Gardens schools back in the 70's, his disdain for blacks written al over his face. I can only hope for the best for the employees of the Thai restaurant across the street, because based on the tone of his voice when he talked about Mexicans, I have no doubt this man is racist as hell, and it is beyond me how he can work in a H.E.R.IT.A.G.E Museum. If he was working for a Ku Klux Klan museum I may understand, but a Heritage Center ...?
Having demonstrated little sympathy for his conservative views, it was recommended to us, I quote: "not to let the door hit our butts on our way out." Yep, you read right.
That said, I have nothing against America, but I just couldn't not bring myself to sympathize with this individual. And with much regret, even though I have been coming to Winter Garden for decades, this was most likely my last visit, because I was so embarrassed to have my friend witness this individual's rant. I expect respect, no insults what I open my wallet and spend money somewhere, regardless if it is am museum or a Coffee shop...
Read moreThe Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is a really cool place my daughter and I have been visiting for many years. Initially, she just wanted to climb into the caboose, and then she graduated to doing scavenger hunts. We've been there dozens of times over the years, and it never gets old for her. They occasionally update the scavenger hunt and rearrange the exhibits. It's fascinating to watch her grow and see how she interacts with the history of Winter Garden. Even though she has been climbing into that same caboose for seven years, every time she runs up those steps, it feels like the first time for her. It's a great place to experience the history of...
Read moreThe museum and the sweet lady running it were both a great source of knowledge about the area. The museum is quite small but it is free and full of high quality antiques and artifacts. I wondered into the gift shop a bit past the rail car, while the gift shop was enjoyable the lady running it was out of decorum. While shopping around she revealed her political views and hot-takes while also explaining her hard childhood; both of which I did not ask for. It was quite unpleasant, and a bit depressing. It is quite sad to see mature and respectable elders to fall for conspiracy theories, down that path...
