Hanoi's Train Street is a fascinating and unique experience, but it's important to be aware of the current regulations. While it has faced closures due to safety concerns, as of 2025, parts of it are accessible, often by being invited into a local cafe. The key is to be respectful of the residents and, above all, to prioritize safety. Here are 5-star reviews written as if from delighted visitors who experienced it while adhering to safety guidelines and supporting local businesses: Review 1: "Thrilling & Authentic - A Must-See Hanoi Experience!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hanoi Train Street was absolutely incredible! We went at a recommended train time and were guided into a charming little cafe by a friendly local. Sipping on delicious Vietnamese coffee just inches from the tracks as the massive train rumbled past was an experience I'll never forget. The cafe owner was fantastic, making sure everyone was safe and had a great view. It's a surreal blend of everyday life and adrenaline-pumping excitement. This isn't just a tourist spot; it's a living, breathing part of Hanoi's unique charm. Highly recommend going with a local cafe to ensure a safe and authentic experience. Review 2: "Unforgettable Photo Op & Local Charm!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What an amazing place! Hanoi Train Street delivered on all the hype and more. We arrived about 45 minutes before a scheduled train and settled into a cozy cafe. The atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation. The moment the train appeared, it was absolutely mesmerizing – the speed, the sound, the sheer proximity! It felt so unique to be right there, experiencing a piece of local life unfolding before our eyes. The cafe staff were super vigilant about safety, guiding everyone to a secure spot. Don't miss this, but definitely go with a cafe that knows the ropes for a safe and memorable visit. Review 3: "Beyond Expectations - A True Hanoi Gem!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Train Street was one of the highlights of our Hanoi trip. We found a lovely little spot where we could enjoy a refreshing iced tea and watch the world go by before the main event. When the train approached, the transformation of the street was incredible – everything cleared in an instant, and then the train thundered past, an exhilarating sight! It truly gives you a glimpse into the resilient and adaptable spirit of Hanoi. The locals were so welcoming and ensured everyone's safety. It's more than just seeing a train; it's experiencing a truly unique cultural phenomenon. Review 4: "Adrenaline & Authenticity - Hanoi at its Best!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was an absolutely mind-blowing experience! We heard about Train Street and were intrigued, and it did not disappoint. We made sure to find a reputable cafe with friendly staff who welcomed us in. Watching the train pass within arm's reach was an incredible rush, a truly unique sensation. It's a testament to how locals live alongside this daily spectacle. The cafes have perfected the art of making it safe and enjoyable for visitors. If you're in Hanoi, you HAVE to see Train Street, but remember to be respectful and follow their instructions – it makes for the best and safest visit. Review 5: "A Cultural Immersion with a Thrilling Twist!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hanoi Train Street is not just a place, it's an event! We arrived curious and left absolutely thrilled. We found a charming little cafe right by the tracks, and the owner was fantastic, explaining the train schedule and ensuring our safety. The moment the train roared past, the energy was palpable – a truly visceral experience. It's a brilliant insight into local life, where homes and businesses exist in such close proximity to the railway. It's unique, exciting, and wonderfully authentic. Title: An Unforgettable Experience at Hanoi’s Famous Train Street!

Review:

Visiting Hanoi’s Train Street was one of the most thrilling and unique experiences of my time in Vietnam. If you’re a traveler looking for something beyond the typical tourist attractions, this iconic alleyway offers an incredible mix of adrenaline, history, and local culture.

The street itself is narrow and lined with homes, small cafes, and shops on both sides, with railway tracks running directly down the middle. When you first see it, it’s almost surreal—a regular, bustling neighborhood built right along an active train line. The charm of Train Street lies in the way the locals and tourists coexist in such a small space, with life going on as usual despite the occasional rumble of a train speeding by.

I visited during the late afternoon, which I’d highly recommend as it gave me time to explore before the evening train came through. The area is lively, and several small cafes have sprung up along the tracks. These cafes are a great place to sit and enjoy a Vietnamese coffee while taking in the unique scene. Many of the cafe owners are friendly and will chat with you about the street’s history and share tips on the best times and spots for photos. They also give you a heads-up when the train is approaching, as safety is their priority.

As the train approaches, there’s a palpable buzz. The cafe owners, locals, and tourists all spring into action, clearing the tracks, moving tables, and making sure everyone is in a safe spot to watch. The train doesn’t come roaring through at high speed, but it’s still fast enough to feel the thrill! Watching it pass so close is an unforgettable rush, and you can’t help but feel a mix of awe and respect for the locals who experience this as part of their daily routine.

The people who live on Train Street were so welcoming, even as tourists like myself took endless photos and videos. It’s a unique slice of life, with people doing laundry, kids playing, and vendors selling snacks, all within arm’s reach of the tracks. You get to see a glimpse of daily life in a way that’s impossible in more tourist-focused areas, and it adds a depth to the experience that goes beyond just taking photos.

It’s worth mentioning that Train Street has faced safety concerns, and sometimes authorities close off certain sections due to the crowds. When I visited, the cafes were open, but it’s always wise to check ahead, as access rules can change. I’d also recommend being mindful of local guidelines and staying off the tracks unless advised it’s safe by a local. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but safety is key, and respecting the people who live there is important.

One tip: bring a good camera or phone, as the photo opportunities here are amazing. Just remember to stay aware of your surroundings and be considerate of the locals. Capturing the train passing through is iconic, but it’s the overall atmosphere and the interactions with the locals that truly make this place special.

In summary, Hanoi’s Train Street is not just a spot for an adrenaline rush but also a deeply cultural experience. It’s a place where the old world meets the modern, and where visitors can gain a unique perspective on the vibrant city of Hanoi. Just be sure to check the train schedule, arrive early to explore, and, most of all, savor the chance to witness this unforgettable blend of local life...

BEWARE OF SCAMMERS!!!! They will try their best to tell you that is not safe to walk in unless you buy drinks from their shop. CRAZY TRAIN STREET!!!

Hanoi Train Street is a captivating and controversial attraction in the heart of Vietnam’s capital. This narrow alley, where trains pass just inches from homes and cafes, offers a unique blend of thrill and cultural immersion.

⸻

🚂 What Makes Hanoi Train Street Unique?

Nestled between Phùng Hưng and Điện Biên Phủ streets in the Old Quarter, Hanoi Train Street is a narrow railway corridor where trains pass mere inches from buildings. Originally constructed in 1902 during French colonial rule, the railway has become a symbol of the city’s vibrant street life. Over the years, locals have adapted to the train schedule, transforming the area into a bustling hub of cafes and shops that cater to both residents and tourists. Visitors can enjoy a cup of traditional Vietnamese coffee while experiencing the exhilarating proximity of a passing train.

⸻

🗣️ What Travelers Are Saying

Opinions about Hanoi Train Street are varied. Many travelers describe it as a must-see attraction, praising the unique experience of watching a train pass so closely while sipping coffee at a local cafe. The vibrant atmosphere and photogenic setting have made it a favorite among photographers and social media enthusiasts.

However, some visitors express concerns about safety and the area’s transformation due to tourism. A Reddit user noted, “Originally it was a quiet neighborhood for train laborers, but it’s turned into a tourist trap.” Others mention the need for caution, especially when trains approach, as the narrow space can become crowded and hazardous.

⸻

⚠️ Safety and Access Considerations

Safety has become a significant concern at Hanoi Train Street. Due to incidents where tourists ventured too close to the tracks, authorities have implemented measures to control access. In 2019, the government ordered the closure of cafes along the tracks and set up barricades to prevent tourists from entering. Despite these efforts, the allure of the street continues to draw visitors.

Currently, access to the street is often facilitated through local cafes, which may invite tourists in to watch the trains pass. Visitors are advised to follow safety guidelines, stay behind marked lines, and heed warnings from cafe staff. It’s essential to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while enjoying this unique experience.

⸻

☕ Best Cafes for Viewing

Several cafes along Hanoi Train Street offer excellent vantage points to watch the trains. Notable options include: • Hanoi 1990s: Known for its nostalgic decor and prime viewing spots. • Nam Vy Coffee: Popular among tourists for its friendly staff and clear train schedules. • Coffee 40: Offers a cozy atmosphere and close proximity to the tracks.

These establishments often display train schedules and provide guidance to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

⸻

📸 Final Thoughts

Hanoi Train Street offers a distinctive glimpse into the city’s dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity. While the experience is undeniably thrilling, it’s crucial to approach it with awareness and respect for local regulations and safety protocols. By doing so, visitors can enjoy one of Hanoi’s most iconic sights...

The Hanoi Train Street is undoubtedly one of the most popular and adventurous tourist spots in Hanoi. A rustic narrow street hidden in one of the back streets of Hanoi surrounded by high narrow colourful houses packed closely together. These families’ backyards are the railways where the train passes a few times per day.  Although during my visit I didn’t get to see the train pass, nevertheless it was still worthwhile a visit because it’s such a charming little corner! Travel Tips: The train street is located between the streets Phùng Hưng and Lý Nam Đế, right next to Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The exact location is 5 Trần Phú. The train usually passes the Hanoi Train Street late afternoon/evening during the week and throughout the day on weekends, however it’s always changing so do check the timetables with one of the cafes. There are usually guards patrolling the entrances of the Train Street and often won’t allow you to enter unless invited by one of the local cafes from Train Street. Going around Hanoi is usually easiest by walking, as most places in the Old Quarter are not too far. Would you sit here for a coffee whilst watching a train pass? We found a charming little cafe right by the tracks, and the owner was fantastic, explaining the train schedule and ensuring our safety. The moment the train roared past, the energy was palpable – a truly visceral experience. It's a brilliant insight into local life, where homes and businesses exist in such close proximity to the railway. It's unique, exciting, and wonderfully authentic. Just remember to be mindful of the rules and the locals, and you'll have an amazing time!
