Lots of rooms in a stunning old 150yr old building situated in a leafy area of New Town. Close to the Botanical Gardens, Elizabeth St restaurant strip, New Town Shopping Centre with its open 24hr kmart and Mona. And not too far to drive to the city centre and airport.
At check in we received a friendly, warm greeting and were showed the room we had booked. Reception is only open 9am to 6pm. So if you need a check in outside these hrs, let them know in advance otherwise the phone will ring out. There is an after hours number but guests may not know what that is until actually checking in.
The Brownell room is modern, comfy, spacious, well set up with a separate dining/lounge area, kitchen against a wall opposite the king bed, and a separate bathroom/toilet. The mattress is a firm feel. There is new plush carpets, the bathroom is wheelchair accessible and all open plan with no shower glass and a fold up seat/railing. Easy access to a courtyard and straight across the hallway is a door that leads to another courtyard and through to the car park.
Great dining area where you pick from a menu what you want for breakfast and it’s cooked fresh. Guests are offered a barista quality coffee.
The area surrounding the lodge is quiet. But when another guest took a shower the plumbing was very loud in the walls. Thankfully no-one showered late or super early. But I recommend you wear earplugs if you are concerned or if you’re a light sleeper. There are also block out blinds and a large split system aircon in the room.
Room for improvement:
There was no information in the guest guide about when the al la carte breakfast is open in the cafe / restaurant area. My feedback would be to add a small sign in the kitchenette area of the room or in the guest book to advise of this. Was advised it is served 8-10am.
The breakfast menu would benefit with allowing some flexibility to alter what is provided or changes to include staple breakfast meals ie bacon & eggs on toast rather than just “eggs on toast” or “waffles with eggs and bacon.” The combinations on the menu are like double ups. For instance, there’s an option of just “mushrooms and avocado” on toast (but then the “vegan bowl” also contains those things, plus more). Preferred the vegan bowl the best. Also appreciated the proper coffee.
The daily service of the room wasn’t really consistent. The floors weren’t mopped at all during our stay. They provided new towels on 2nd day, but not the 3rd. Tissue box and toilet paper ran out by the 2nd day and weren’t replenished. We had to...
Read moreDon't be fooled by the long standing reviews of this place. My wife and I recently booked two nights at the maylands lodge due to the reviews and photos expecting this place to be upto scratch as a top rated accommodation in Hobart. Beautiful old building but thats where the good stops unfortunately. I think the ownership has changed sometime recently but unsure when.
The room we booked was unstocked with any welcome goods, soaps, creams, tea or coffee of the likes. The reception emailed several times through the booking to see when we would arrive. Upon checkin via a lockbox key which can be opened if you just take the letter on the door after 5pm by anyone... we went to the bathroom for a shower after a long day only for the bathroom to flood completely after 20 seconds of the shower being on. It doesn't drain at all and almost flooded the rooms carpet if I left it on.
Called the after hours reception for help and only received "I don't know what to do, maybe we can give you more towels". No offer to change our room or literally any one of a million things you could have thought or tried to do.. I told them we couldn't shower without flooding the apartment and no response, still no offer to change room.
Went to bed, the next morning woke up for the greatly reviewed breakfast/coffee. The Coffee was milky and weak, had absolutely zero flavour. The "continental" breakfast has almost zero options. Some cold salami, a bit of toast, some underripe fruit and corn flakes. No eggs, no hot food despite an entire industrial kitchen in plain sight. And woefully plain food.
After this we asked the reception what they could do about the room as we still hadn't showered. They said they would let housekeeping know and get more towels for us, still no other options apparently. At this point very tired and angry we went on agoda and booked a room at the islington hotel (totally worth the price) and grabbed our bags to checkout.
When handing in the keys they just said oh sorry, would you like another room after the third time we mentioned all the issues and had already paid for another hotel. We said no because of the inaction and poor service and thanked them for having us. No offer of a refund for our second night booked, no apologies nothing.
Entirely disappointed and upset and want my money back for this experience. Worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my life which is sorely disappointing considering how beautiful...
Read moreI don’t know where to begin; IT WAS A FABULOUS EXPERIENCE!!! We booked the hotel same day of check in and had a late check-in. The hotel staff will leave at 2 PM and after that no one is at the reception. We tried calling several times around 5PM and even thought it’s a scam. But when we went there, at the gate, they had left a number to call for after hours. Then we found out, the information email regarding late check in never arrived on our inbox. While on call, the manager lady explained how to check in and she has even left us an envelope with keycards.
We stayed there 2 nights and on the second night we got a great upgrade to the top room. The room comes with all facilities. They even have gas fireplace in the room. I would highly recommend do checkin to the premium room as it offers bathtub and beautiful room of the valley. At night, it was jus us around 7:30 and I guess rest of the guests were out. I was so scared to walk down the living room as the building interior exactly look like many of the horror movies. Fun apart, I have asked the presence of any spirits and the manager assured there are none. I agree, this place isn’t haunted even though it was build 150 years ago.
When you are there; ask for the history of the house and it’s interesting. The in-house bar is based on honest system. You could drink any drinks off the shelves and just make sure you leave the note about how much you consumed. You will be charged based on what you wrote. They have all varieties of alcohol in the house. In the living room, under the floor, lies the hidden wine cellar. This can be open by a special key and ask the management for the same.
This quaint country mansion is a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. The body cream, shower gel, shampoo and conditioners were are high quality. You can also go to the top most floor where laid back seating for relaxing or even read a book. The breakfast service is very good and I still taste the eggs Benedict they served. Best part, it’s included in the room charge. 100%...
