The highlight of our stay was the service from Fonzi and Dave.
We are from Adelaide and booked to stay at the Oaks on December 5 & 6th. While there, we decided to stay the 7th too. The night before we were scheduled to drive back to Adelaide, our car had mechanical issue and we had to book a fourth night (the 8th). This mechanical trouble occurred late Saturday & Sunday, not much was open, we were also waiting on the RACV and tow truck etc, so weren’t sure how long it would take or if we would be able get back on the road Sunday or would have to stay until Monday. During this uncertainty Fonzi and Dave were unbelievably helpful, they were understanding and friendly, allowed us to keep our car in the carpark and our bags in our room for quite some time while we worked out whether we were checking out or staying. These two staff members were also excellent the whole time, from the start of our stay, before the mechanical issues, they were so friendly and made us definitely want to come back to this hotel again. Dave also suggested a great eatery around the corner for breakfast which was excellent. The other staff were also very lovely, we didn’t talk with them a whole lot but they were very nice in the few interactions we had.
The room was tidy, we loved the the suite as having a full kitchen is fantastic, definitely a plus. Also having a little balcony was awesome. The pricing affordable and the view great, we stayed on the “alley way side” for 3 nights and enjoyed this view, the buildings around gave us this real sense of being in a CBD and we really enjoyed it. On the 4th night, we stayed on the park view side which was of course lovely. The location was great, short walk to Queen Victoria Markets, public transport close by, park across the road etc. And the whole hotel, lobby, elevators, hallway and room all smelt really good, must be a cleaner or room spray they use, just delightful. My only critiques (and the reason the room got one less star) is that the firm bed is a bit too firm for us personally. In saying that, I like thin pillows and always have to take my own pillows to hotels as the pillows are generally way too thick, this hotel actually had a pillow I could use, which is very unusual, so I do love the pillows here (also had a thicker pillow for those who like it). My other comment is that the shutters allow a small amount of light in, not totally blackout if it’s sunny and you’re sleeping during the day. The bed was firm for us as such, that if we hadn’t received the excellent service that we did, we would need to carefully consider staying again, but the service was the best ever and therefore we really look forward to staying again.
I hope this hotel recognises the great staff they have (Fonzi and Dave for us), and does whatever they can to keep these guys, they’re a real asset to the business.
Thanks so much guys, you were the highlight of our...
Read moreThe greatest benefit to a hotel apartment is having a kitchen. If you want a useful kitchen during your stay in Melbourne, book a different hotel. The statement "well-equipped, full kitchen" is false advertising. There is a full set of appliances: two hobs, a small oven, microwave, refrigerator, tea kettle, and half-sized dishwasher. But they only provide you with one small pan. There is no pot to even boil water. You aren't even given a spatula to use to cook in the frying pan! There is a potato peeler though. I had to go shopping to by dish soap, a kitchen knife, a spatula, and a pan for the oven.
When I arrived, there was only butter knives in the drawer. Nothing sharp enough to cut a vegetable with - or a cutting board. I asked if I could get a cutting board and knife. They brought me a boning knife (a long curved knife ideal for separating meat from the bone... but not for the simple prep of cutting up vegetables or to cut up food when you're eating). Sure, it would be ideal to have a full knife set in any kitchen... but I would've been happen with a steak knife. A boning knife is a bit dangerous to chop up garlic with. A nearby store has 0 affordable knives in stock since uni students are moving in, so I ended up spending $50 on a knife from a kitchen store.
The hotel provides 100ml of dish washing soap in a plastic packet, and one single packet of dishwasher powder. The body wash soap dispenser in the shower attached to the wall was empty upon arrival. There is no handsoap in the kitchen. Cleaning only happens after 7 days of stay.
This hotel apartment was more expensive than another hotel apartment option I was considering. I chose this one because it had a balcony. The other one had a pool. My balcony had a broken table. I had to ask twice to get it replaced, because I really did want to sit out on the balcony over a 4 day trip and balcony is too small to move the room's table out. The hotel is advertised with gorgeous photos overlooking bright city buildings or the park. I got unlucky with my room facing the alley. Of course, someone has to get the no-view room... but the booked this hotel for the kitchen and the balcony. Both were a disappointed and I feel I wasted my money. I wish I booked another hotel.
Wifi is slow with basic email use, constantly goes down. I have to sit with the sliding glass door wide open with the table on the balcony to use the Wifi.
There is no couch, just a bean bag type chair. Closet is decently sized. Two nightstands provide storage. The bed is actually comfortable. If you just want a fridge, microwave, or heat up a can of soup in a shallow pan... then maybe this...
Read moreThis was the first time I've ever booked a hotel. Partner chose this place when he was looking for somewhere that was affordable without sacrificing the amenities and hospitality. Specifically, he wanted a view of the cityline at night. Unfortunately, our balcony and view was blocked by a giant building around the same size as this hotel. Sabotage! Crushed rendezvoux dreams aside, the studio was nice. It was open-space and the only closed off rooms were the bathroom and an ample sized wardrobe that also stored an ironing board and iron. The biggest space was the bedroom that doubles as the livingroom. We really appreciated the design and decor here. The only room I didn't like was the bathroom which was dull and lacklustre. It lacked natural lighting and was yellowed out by the paint job. Neutral is nice, but this was like "neu... 🚫 not this colour!" But, the bathroom was a good size and the modern shower was a generous size. The small hallway/kitchen that you step in to when you enter the room was my favourite. It was connected to bedroom (or main room) and the only way in/out. It was a narrow kitchen but a wide hallway and wasn't long. In this little nook, they somehow managed to fit a full working kitchen: stove top, regular fridge, sink and under cupboard, a pull put rangehood and dishwasher drawer, tabletop microwave, drawers, cupboards/cabinets that mounted up on the wall, etc. The Oaks also provided things that weren't essential. Small things like teabags and sachets with coffee, sugars, dish detergent and dishwasher soap, toiletries and milk capsules. There was also a TV on the wall in front of the bed (yay! couch-potato dreams) and a proper hair dryer - not the little sh💩ty ones fixed onto the wall. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and good value for money. I do advise anyone interested to plan ahead where to park if they have a car. There is limited parking out the front. If you a lucky to nab a spot there, you'd still probably need to move youe vehicle in the morning after, when the hours these spots are limited by come to effect again. Or, take your chances/time and pay a parking fine if...
