Gent City Center — Hotel in Ghent

Ghent, a city steeped in history and architectural marvels, is undeniably a place of extraordinary beauty. Its picturesque canals, medieval buildings, and cobblestone streets create an enchanting atmosphere that transports you to a bygone era. However, beyond the postcard-perfect façade, my experience in Ghent has been marked by some less pleasant aspects.

One of the most striking observations during my time in Ghent has been the demeanor of the locals. While I expected a certain degree of regional variation in behavior, the consistent rudeness and arrogance I encountered from some residents left me taken aback. It's a stark contrast to the city's charming surroundings and historical significance.

Service quality in many establishments has also been a letdown. Whether it's a restaurant or a shop, I've encountered instances of inattentiveness and apathy among staff. While this is by no means a universal experience, it's disappointing when it does occur, given the potential for excellence that Ghent's tourism industry holds.

The issue of waste management is another concern. While Ghent strives to be eco-conscious, the city's waste collection system appears to be inadequate. The infrequency of rubbish collection, just once a week, is surprising for a city of its size. Additionally, the strict regulations regarding separating waste into categories like PMD (plastic, metal, and drink cartons) can lead to problems. If an item is accidentally placed in the wrong bin, it goes uncollected for weeks, emitting unpleasant odors and affecting the overall cleanliness of the streets.

In summary, Ghent City is undoubtedly a sight to behold, with its rich history and architectural splendors. However, the less-than-pleasant encounters with some residents, inconsistent service quality, and issues with waste management have marred my experience. While I appreciate the city's efforts to be environmentally conscious, there is room for improvement in terms of service standards and waste collection practices. E dunque eccoci a Gent (o Gand, in lingua francese 🇫🇷), ovvero la prima tra le città delle Fiandre toccate dal nostro tour itinerante 🚘 del Belgio 🇧🇪. Giunti in albergo 🏨 sulle 17.00 🕔 direttamente da Boussu (cittadina vallona della provincia dell'Hainaut che avevamo visitato nel primo pomeriggio), abbiamo effettuato subito il check-in 🧑🏼‍💻 e raggiunto la nostra stanza 🛏 per uscire poi verso ora di cena. Qui è iniziata effettivamente la nostra passeggiata 🚶🏻🚶🏻‍♀️ esplorativa del ricchissimo e fastoso centro storico. Lo definisco così poiché questa città, peraltro capoluogo della Provincia delle Fiandre Orientali, ci è davvero parsa la più monumentale e sfarzosa tra quelle che abbiamo avuto il piacere di scoprire, quantomeno nella regione a maggioranza fiamminga. Sicuramente degne di nota le piazze e i magnifici scorci sui canali ma, in particolare, siamo rimasti colpiti 😮 dalla ricercatezza delle decorazioni dei palazzi 🏫 🏤. Il castello 🏰 dei Conti di Fiandra poi meriterebbe una menzione a parte, anche per come s'inserisce armoniosamente nel contesto urbanistico circostante. Inoltre, davvero suggestiva l'atmosfera del centro storico avvolto dai tenui colori della sera 🎇. Il nostro giro è proseguito il giorno successivo dopo aver effettuato il check-out in albergo 🏨. Una volta caricati i bagagli 🎒🧳 in macchina 🚘 abbiamo dunque ripreso la nostra passeggiata 🚶🏻🚶🏻‍♀️ individuando dapprima un bel locale per fare una robusta colazione 🍳🍞🥞🥐☕️ e, in seguito, godendoci nuovamente le bellezze del centro. Purtroppo, in virtù del poco tempo a disposizione, la nostra esperienza si è inevitabilmente dovuta limitare ad una fugace occhiata 👀 passeggiando 🚶🏻🚶🏻‍♀️ qua e là tra vie, piazze, rive e banchine fluviali; ad ogni modo, il breve soggiorno si è rivelato utile per avere un primo assaggio di una città che, senza dubbio, mi piacerebbe rivedere con più calma.
