Café René — Restaurant in Ghent

I never thought that drinking water in a restaurant would become an issue but here it did. After ordering our main course and drinks (including wine) we asked for tap water for the table. We were told it is ‘not available’ and served bottled water (which we later found out was charged at €6.10 for 75cl). We then asked for the hot water in the herbal tea to be topped up because it was too strong, to be told that the restaurant does not offer extra water for teas! I approached the manager who was not willing to engage on the matter as it is his ‘restaurant’s policy’ and that ‘the restaurant needs to pay for its water’. I am shocked that even though I pointed out the carbon footprint of a bottle of water, he stood by his greedy standpoint. Waiter was extremely rude and racist. Ignored us and served everyone else (who came after us), he gave the menu to everyone else but my friend and I - literally walked past us. I had to go downstairs to ask for the menu, he said ‘okay’ then walked away. Eventually he brought the menu. We told him we were ready to order and he walked away again. He put olives and bread on the other tables (walked right past us - no acknowledgment for us - no olives or bread). We waited for a while and he still didn’t take out order. He took orders and served everyone who came after us. A decent burger restaurant, but don't expect great food on every level.

On the food: The burger: 4/5

The burger itself is pretty good compared to the competion in the area. The bun is the best ever. The sauce is also really good.

The fries: 1/5

The packaging looks nice, and is originally served. The fries themselves, sadly, are disappointing, they are not freshly cut and for a price of 3,- a portion they really should be. The fries feel like they are mid-range supermarket fries to be prepared in any random frying pan. For a burger restaurant, this is just sad.
