I wanted to like this place based on the high reviews and having enjoyed other hostels in the past, but it is literally GROSS. People seem to live here without any respect for others. When I first walked into my room, I was greeted by another person’s pile of clothes on the ground and their toothbrush on the windowsill. (Picture inserted) This person seems to be staying here a while, the place is run by a lot of fellow young people / volunteers. They are sweet people, but there’s no management or promotion of cleanliness. Also there’s no set quiet hours so people are talking, listening to music, and turning on dorm lights at all times. The curtains on the beds are also somewhat see through, so it’s easy to be woken up by these disturbances. The bathroom situation is also extremely scattered with bathrooms in random places, which can be disorienting for night time bathroom runs or during busy shower times. Overall though, I was just disappointed with how messy things are here. There were literally old food wrappers that I saw on a shelf my entire stay. There are no locks or key cards on doors so anyone can walk into any room, and another guest alarmed me of a stealing incident. It seems like this place is all about just “going with the flow” without real measures to maintain the atmosphere. I wanted to stay since I did meet some friends, however, the lack of sanitation alone made me really anxious to leave. I think if you don’t care as much about that aspect, you’ll enjoy this place. However, I stayed in some pretty well kept hostels in SE Asia & have higher...
Read moreI stayed at Castelo Dos Tucanos for a week during carnival and had the best time ever. The hostel itself is in a beautifully restored mansion in Santa Teresa that’s surrounded by its own private jungle, making it feel like you’re in a tropical oasis in the middle of the city. As soon as you set foot on the hostel grounds, you can tell that this is one of those special hostels that you don’t forget. The hostel is located on top of a hill, allowing you to get some of the best views in the area - we could even see Christo from our dorm window which was amazing. The outdoor pool area really speaks for itself and was without a doubt one of the best chill out areas I’ve ever experienced in a hostel. The vibes in the hostel were incredible and I’m already looking forward to staying here again when I’m next in Rio. You’re basically right in the heart of Santa Teresa with some really nice bars and restaurants all within a couple minutes walking distance. The bottom of the street also has a manned security guard box with a barrier which made us all feel very safe. This hostel is the definition of a hidden gem so do yourself a favour and book it in - you won’t regret it. Shout out to Saul and the team for always being super friendly, accommodating and for going above and beyond to make my stay an...
