Stayed for a week during the Olympics & so glad we found this place in Santa Teresa. It's a hidden oasis & we loved being able to spend a few hours relaxing on the terrace after a busy morning. And monkeys were included when we visited!||||Obviously peak prices applied but we expected that given its great location. We stayed in the most basic room (last available room) but it had all we needed for a good stay. Comfy bed, decent shower, air con. Breakfasts were particularly good & all the staff were friendly & helpful given our lack of Portuguese. Only criticism would be that you heard other guests/staff coming & going as our room was nearest the hotel entrance but it wasn't a major issue for us.||||We got a yellow taxi from airport for around 90 Reais & same driver agreed to 50 R for the return trip. 10 minute walk down to Gloria metro & you can easily use Uber or yellow taxis if you don't fancy the fairly steep walk up hill at night or in the afternoon heat. Neighbourhood felt absolutely fine to us although if you're not used to living in a city, you could feel bit wary on first impressions. Decent restos within a few mins walk, small grocery store nearby & cake stall couple of doors down on the right was popular late afternoon. Parque das Ruinas & Selaron steps 10-15 mins walk away.||||Santander bank right by Gloria metro was handy & Flamengo beach just 20 mins away & far less crowded than Copa beach.||||If we visited again would want to stay in one of the fancier rooms but no option to do that this time but would definitely recommend Quinta Azul. The helpful, friendly staff & complimentary tea/coffee on the terrace was really...
Read moreFirst time in Rio to see the Olympics. On arrival at night we were aprehensive, as we had paid more than hansomly for our accommodation with high expectations, the very steep cobbled roads and graffitied buildings and walls were a real culture shock compaired to south west London. When the street level security gate was opened we were immediately surprised by this hidden hotel. Its built on a steep downward hill and its easy to miss. All the other reviews give you a good idea about the Quinta Azul and we did grow to like it a lot. Ok.. the rooms are very basic.. but they have added the modern creature comforts. Air con, wifi, empty fridge and tv. The 24 hour security staffing gives good comfort too. The breakfast is fantastic if you love your fresh fruit and good coffee. The staff are very happy to help you and are genuinely friendly. Getting around.. use uber taxi if you want simplicity but walk up to the crossroads before you order it as they find it hard to find you everytime, dont forget you will need an Internet connection on your mobile. Yello taxi is good but will cost you around a third more. Walking around is fine..but try to keep to the tram line roads. If you want to blend in keep your clothing very simple. All in all we paid all the money, but it's a great little hotel in the well located old town of Santa Teresa. Finally don't forget some ear plugs to ensure a proper nights sleep (you are in Brasil after all and the local dogs have a woof-off most of the time) and a three prong...
Read moreThis one is hard to rate - the staff were very nice and helpful and when the shower didnt have any hot water i was offered another room to shower in while they fixed it. Great location with nice cafes nearby. The breakfast was nice and even big cooked breakfast lovers would be happy. The common areas were lovely and I did spend some time there as internet didnt work in the room. ||But the room (room 7, and I booked the most expensive deluxe type because of other reviews here) was small and dark with little natural light which made sorting cases difficult. It may have been a bit damp but it was hard to tell in the rain. I did see in one of the cheaper upper rooms and liked it more and frankly I think the more expensive ones are because of the outdoor spa bath and I am not sure it is worth it. All curtains needs repair. ||yes there are steps but they do go out of their way to help with luggage.||I wasnt bothered by noise but some would be annoyed by barking dogs as this is in a residential area. I think the tram would have been pretty noisy in the front rooms at the top. That said, the tram provides free transport into Lapa. ||My best advice is to get a fixed price transport here as the taxis seem to think it is further up the hill and they miss it. On arrival our driver went to a number 2000 more than we asked for but luckily it was...
