Very happy we chose this hotel! Location is GREAT! Super quick walk to downtown and back, easy to get to the beach by the big orange bridge, quick 10 min walk to the sister property for restaurants/pool. Little strip mall with a grocery store right next door.
Check in experience was GREAT! When i booked i made a note that i have a severe fragrance allergy and requested that all the body care products be removed and no air fresheners be in the room (if used). Sheila checked us in and was so wonderful. She referenced my booking note, took the time to discuss that the cleaning staff had been made aware and that they left the window open to air out the room as the cleaning products used did have some scent. The room was decent; has everything needed (kitchenette was small but serviceable for a few days stay) and best of all, they did not leave soaps or shampoos or anything and even the dishsoap they left was unscented (super important to me). And, best of all- no scent smell in the room.
Downside is that the active train track is literally right next to the hotel BUT we were made aware of this with lots of notice so if we thought it was a problem, we could easily have booked elsewhere. It turned out to not be much of a problem. We were awakened by the train one morning but it was less loud than anticipated and wouldn't be a reason not to stay again. There are few 'amenities' but everything is noted clearly on the website so if one is expecting more, they likely didn't read through the info on the website.
We were also given $10 off vouchers to use at any of the sister location restaurants because we declined having our room cleaned and fresh linens provided daily, which was a really unexpected and nice touch to help promote more environmentally friendly practises. It was great to be able to use those the first night before we got the lay of the land in Nelson.
Would absolutely stay here again on my...
Read moreStayed here two times now. First time I booked the "accessible room" which was not great at all (2021ish?). Small, bed against the wall, and the bathroom was in terrible shape. There was mold in the caulking and was not what I expected for accessible. Extra grab bars into a regular tub, with a fixed shower head maybe 4 ft up. Pretty big surprise and inconvenience for anyone who is wanting to stand to shower.
Second time we stayed (this summer) we booked a regular room. It was ok. Bathroom walls have been cut into/repaired multiple times as evidenced by the cuts in the wallpaper; after 3 or 4 times, maybe its time just to replace the wallpaper on the entire wall so it doesnt look so shabby. Patio is nice but it would be better to have sheers in addition to the provided curtains so you could actually have sunlight come in without losing privacy.
The $10 off in exchange for declined housekeeping is a big scam in my opinion. They made the coupons available for use the day of checkout - at that point, we're leaving Nelson so these coupons are useless. So basically the hotel saves paying it's staff for housekeeping and gets only a small fraction of people going to the other hotel to redeem their coupons at the restaurant. Win/win for them.
The parking lot is pretty tough to get out of with the one way exiting onto the busier of the two streets.
No vending machine or concession was a shock as I've never seen a hotel with absolutely nothing to purchase for drinks.
Staff members I dealt with were friendly and the location itself is pretty convenient.
Overall I think this hotel is pretty overpriced for what...
Read moreCurrently staying here for a total of 3 nights. I travel a lot for work and stay in hotels all across the province. I'm always curious when people say the service is non-existent, especially at the $90-120 price point. Maybe it's because I'm easy-going and don't require much, but there's always been someone at the front desk and they pick up the phone when I called. Do people expect a complimentary foot massage or something? Anyway, the room/bathroom is small but very cute. Everything is clean enough for me. Nice balcony with a great view to give you a taste of what the West Kootenays offers. Little drafty but there's heat and warm blankets. I've lived in many different cities with active trains so it doesn't really bother me, though I can see why it would for others. To be expected for mountain cities like this. The complimentary internet is stone-age tech which just will not do for me. Called to upgrade expecting to pay but they gave it to me for free. Pretty hard to get 5 stars from me because I've stayed at a 2 star lodge in Haida Gwaii once where the lovely owner would leave a small snack for me everyday consisting of items from her garden, among other things. Hard to beat or even equal that. I've stayed at $160 rooms with way worse service and lumpier pillows, so shrug. People mention the layout with all the stairs... why wouldn't you ask the front desk about personal accessibility issues before coming? You just blindly book and then expect the world without doing any research? People call millennials...
