Wow, this inn is a treasure. It's decorated beautifully--a mix of antiques and new pieces, and super clean. The downstairs of the inn is all for guests--seating for breakfast and lounging areas, all lovely, like visiting a friend's home if your friend had great taste and a gorgeous mansion from the 1800s. We were greeted with sparkling wine or iced tea at check-in, and there are little yummy homemade snacks like roasted nuts and cookies you can take with you. The room was huge--we got a suite with two bedrooms and bathrooms (!) for much less than I would have expected for what we got (we booked at the last minute and I guess we got lucky as a room was still available)--and so comfortable and inviting. There is a subtle marine theme with lots of old pictures of ships and blues and whites. The inn is off the beaten path, surrounded by a big lawn with lots of trees (it would be so pretty for a wedding!), in a quiet suburban neighborhood near the river, and across the street from their other property, the Kent Motel, which they've also done a fantastic job of remodeling (we walked over there at one point--it's much cheaper with more families, so it might be louder and there's no breakfast included, but it's super cute and cool...not your grandpa's motor inn). The breakfast at South Landing was also incredible--they have their own pastry chef and everything was topnotch--delicious pain au chocolat, frittatas, homemade bread and jam, fruit with yogurt and granola.... Highly recommend! My only complaints: 1) The A/C in our bedroom didn't seem to work properly (though the one in the other bedroom in the suite worked perfectly); we were able to open the windows all the way, though, and the night was cool enough that we still slept pretty well. 2) The curtains are heavy gray cotton but still let in some light, so if you're like me you'll wake up early--though we were going to the falls the next day anyway (and got down to breakfast on the earlier side to get the best selection) so this was good in a way. Would love to stay here again someday! P.S. One last tip--the inn is also 10 minutes away from a great, semi-casual restaurant, Tide and Vine--oddly, it specializes in oysters, not freshwater fish, and it's in a strip mall, but it's one of the few places near Niagara-on-the-Lake that isn't super expensive prix fixe or pub food, and the food was fantastic (and I can be snobby about food). Eat there, stay at the South Landing, take a walk along the river, and go to Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds if you're doing the falls, and it'll be an utterly perfect...
Read moreWe were three friends looking for a peaceful place to stay in Niagara on the Lake after our wine tour and my friend said "I found the perfect place." And DID SHE! The South Landing Inn is, indeed, the perfect place to unwind for any reason. We had Room 6, the upstairs suite, and it was right out of a Hallmark movie. Spacious and homey--we loved that it wasn't super posh, it was thoughtfully decorated and cared for so we weren't afraid to actually live in it. We really just moved right in. ||Staff were incredibly kind, accommodating, and generous with their time helping us figure out our plans. ||And then there was the upscale continental breakfast! I wish I had a photo, but I was too busy eating. The pastries took me to France, emotionally. Everything was fantastic, hearty, beautiful, and simple (except for the exquisite pastries), and they are happy to cater to a variety of dietary needs every day, and especially if you give them a few days notice. ||And I have to talk about the tea situation. As a tea drinker, my expectations of a cup of tea outside of my own house are low, but especially when staying overnight at a hotel or similar. The South Landing Inn's tea service blew me away in the best possible way. The guest pantry on the main floor has personal glass tea pots that you can brew a delightful small pot of one of their lovely loose leaf teas and take it back to your room--the suite also had an electric kettle which was a delightful surprise (and there were small tea pots and some loose leaf tea in a drawer in the suite as well, I just had to go downstairs for some milk). And the provided mugs are just right. ||One thing that's particularly noteworthy in this day in electronics: the inn is so close to the border that my phone kept thinking I was in the US, and the cell signal wasn't great when my phone knew I was still in Canada. And the wifi wasn't hugely robust either, and you know what that meant? We watched FRIENDS rereuns on the tv, drank tea and chatted and just completely disconnected. It was truly a vacation. ||After booking I found out that a friend of mine books writing retreats here, and now I know why!||Our only regret was that we only booked one night. I already can't wait to go back. We're staying at least 3...
Read moreOur party of three ladies were celebrating a milestone birthday. I booked the Riverview Suite and we arrived hot, disheveled and hungry late in the afternoon. Our host, general manager Matthew, received us cordially and proceeded to give us a tour of the Inn. Including its history, where the snacks and drinks were located, and the keys to allow us access and egress.
Part of the charm of this very charming establishment is that it is not your typical inn or hotel. It is delightfully quirky. We had a private staircase to get to our aerie-level suite, which was a fabulous space with a king and two queen-sized beds, two bathrooms, kitchenette, livingroom and balcony. It was spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable. Exactly what we needed. We enjoyed the quiet nights and cool evening air, only a 10 minute drive from Niagara on the Lake. Breakfast was included in the room rate. It was simple but tasty, nutritious and filling.
Our stay was only for two days, but it was memorable for many reasons; among them the charming and welcoming staff and the venue itself at this location. Highly recommended if you like to be off the beaten trail a bit! We...
