Merchant Marco Hotel — Hotel in Hangzhou City

The hotel is a few minutes walk from West Lake and getting to West lake means going via a main shopping area with loads of shops and food nearby. So it's ideal for that. There's several bakeries and 24 hours stores right next to the hotel also. The rooms are very clean and have a good amount of room. The TV service is also good with a mix of English and Chinese video-on-demand and live TV. But the volume is a little low on some shows and you cannot change it to go higher (lower is fine) If I had to find a fault is that the air con is not the coldest, but when we went (February 2023) it was okay. The other elements of the hotel far exceed this minor flaw. The breakfast, both Chinese and English is good with a good mixture of hot and cold foods along with pastries, bread, cheeses, salad, cereal and a cook station for eggs and dumplings etc... There's also a bar in the hotel and a Starbucks and an okay gym (some cardio machines, free weights and a multi-gym station) - its better than most hotels that put a rubbish treadmill in the corner and call it a gym. This hotel does better than that. The rooms are quiet and it is a nice place to sleep. They even have a pillow menu.If I go to Hangzhou then I would stay here again. The location is great as it's not super busy as it's a few mins' walk from Main Street, which is perfect. Plus the rooms and service are very clean. This hotel is conveniently located. There are all kinds of stores and restaurants as soon as as you walk out of the hotel. Best of all its less than 10 minutes from West Lake. Breakfast is quite decent as well. Staff were all very friendly and full of smiles. What was impressive was that I watched a security guard help some hotel guests clean out what I suspect was some kind of spillage in the trunk of their car. Overall, very clean, great staff and amazing value. I only gave 3 stars for service instead of 5 because people claim to work for the hotel offered a ride service for 240-300 RMB to drive us around the lake and take us to the best tourist spots. Anywhere we wanted for 3-4 hours. Free to go as we please. So my wife agreed. The reality was that he took us to one tourist spot. The rest were junk shops to sell overpriced tea, silk and other things. After the silk store we told we wanted to go to a specific tourist location and he said they were fake or didn't exist anymore. When he realized we weren't interested in buying anything he found the first available spot and tossed us to the curb. Merchant Marco Hotel, Hangzhou Our stay at Merchant Marco Hotel was enjoyable overall. The location is a major highlight—it’s very close to the train and metro stations, making it incredibly convenient for getting around. It’s also within walking distance to Hangzhou’s main attraction, West Lake (西湖), which was perfect for sightseeing. The hotel layout felt a bit aged and the rooms were slightly smaller than we’d prefer, but the in-room facilities were modern and well-maintained thanks to recent renovations. The staff were friendly and helpful, adding a welcoming touch to our stay. The international breakfast included with our booking was a pleasant surprise, offering a wide variety of dishes with above-average taste. It was a great way to start our mornings. While the hotel could use some updates in terms of space and overall layout, the convenient location, updated amenities, and excellent service made for a comfortable stay.
