Booked a double ROOM with Booking.com for $36 USD thinking that it is an ok price for a basic room with ho shower out in "nowhere" countryside China. Few days later, when waiting to see the exact location of the place on the map and needed to scroll around for their address, what do I suddenly see IN THE FINE PRINT???? That they FORCE ALL CUSTOMERS TO A $20 USD MEMBERSHIP to their HOSTEL???????? Meaning the PRICE I would have to pay would have a 55% increase!!! Excuse me???||||Why would they FORCE CUSTOMER to a 55% price increase and UNNECESSARY MEMBERSHIP in their disgusting Hostel when OBVIOUSLY I WILL NEVER EVER AGAIN stay there in my life??? And Never ever again use MEMBERSHIP in such Hostels??||||It was just ONE NIGHT because near Hong Kong Airport!! NEVER AGAIN planning to stay there, or stay at this low level of lodging!!||||So actually price is not $36 USD but $56???? ||WHY DON'T THEY WRITE THIS AT THE TOP?? ||Why as FINE PRINT??||||Because they are CROOKS! And do this on purpose!||||If I knowingly AGREE to pay $56 UDS for their crappy room with NO BATHROOM even, then I BETTER stay ON THE BEACH for $64 USD at the nearby beach hotel and at least have a wonderful sunset and can dip in the ocean AND have a BATHROOM in my room!!||||Upon noticing this "fine print" I immediately contacted Booking.com to ask why the REAL PRICE was not mentioned the MOMENT I booked this non-refundable booking? ||Why AS A CUSTOMER AM I FORCED TO JOIN HOSTEL CLUB MEMBERSHIP that I will NEVER EVER NEED

Avoid horrible but exorbitant youth hostels in old buildings or mansions. Public facilities of the buildings (lifts, fire service facilities) are often broken and the escape way is blocked, which is life-threatening. Many people are crowded in a few small rooms of an apartment, and the three-compartment bed shakes whenever someone on the bed moves. The narrow and thin mattress on the lower bunk is placed on the ground, so you have to crawl into the bed like a dog and cannot sit upright. Your head will hit the ceiling if you are in the top bunk. The room is dirty, messy, and smelly, and there are insect bites that cause skin diseases. The sound insulation is poor. You hear noise from the street and inside the apartment. You cannot sleep as someone comes in and out and turns on and off the light all night. The place is poorly ventilated and people inhale viruses and get sick. Many people queue up to share a small, smelly, dirty wet toilet with a shower (the shower head is above the toilet seat). The water takes 20 minutes to heat, and no hot water after 3 or 4 minutes of showering. The drain pipe is smelly and sometimes blocked. It is unsafe as there are many strangers in the dorms / private rooms / common areas of the apartment, and things are stolen. Though there might be staff on duty (on another floor), no one will enforce any so-called house rule. There are private rooms but are sometimes more expensive than a four-star hotel. Many people can't withstand and check out after staying for a night (without getting any refund, the hostel owners are happy). Youth hostels sell beds on different platforms, but the number of beds left is not immediately updated (& beds may be oversold). Youth hostels spend a lot to promote "good reviews". Beware. Some youth hostels also operate shadow (unlicensed) hostels. These kinds of low-cost but high-price hostels are a nightmare for backpackers. You might find them even worse than staying at...
Read moreTung Chung - 2 nights - private double roomExpectation/Reality: this is the only provider of accommodation in the area so expectations need to be managed. They have the ability to essentially set terms, so the negative reviews here are likely from the folks who didn’t read the find print. The photos match the space very well. However the hostel reached out over what’s app a number of days before the booking asking for the $150 membership fee and $500 deposit, which I was not comfortable providing until arrival, however the hostel was okay with that.Security: very good, there is a gate lock and a lock to the door, very safe.Hygiene: overall very clean, no concerns.Hospitality: the check in and out process is all over what’s app, so you are at the mercy of how responsive they are which can be frustration when trying to get in. Once you are in, it’s fine.Social Atmosphere: good social spaces.Overall: given they essentially have a monopoly on accommodation in the area. It’s a pretty good spot. I accidentally broke the key and they came and fixed it the next day, but took off $50 from the deposit. So handle the keys gently. Over...
