This place has great value, the rooms are comfy and there are lots of cool places to hang out. The Hump Hostel is located on the third floor of a building in the old town area and has a couple rooftop patios, a restaurant/bar and a billiards table. The WWII decor was unexpected for us as we weren't aware of the history of Kunming but we were very interested to learn more of the war efforts made in Kunming.||||The food at the restaurant was hit or miss but the breakfast is included with the stay. For the western breakfast the two days I had it there was one sunny side up egg, a small salad, two waffle pieces and some fruit - the first day I had it everything was cold and the second day the waffles were fresh. My wife ordered the Chinese breakfast and the first day it was bland congee but the second day she had breakfast she had a flavourful noodle soup.||||The cocktails were very good and were decent value at 48 RMB each. You can pretty much get anything you want but they do have a couple specialty cocktails like the golden horse (whiskey) and the hump (Pink grapefruit based) cocktails which we really liked. The bar area is lively at night with live music, a good patio and nice big tables throughout. Some of the food in the evening looked pretty good too.||||We got a standard room with two twin beds. The beds were very comfy and the AC was more than enough. The bathroom was nice but we found the hot water was a little spotty and could be perfect one second and scalding the next! The bathroom needed a little maintenance as it was a little dirty in the corners and the toilet needed to be resecured at the base.||||They have a couple big sink and shower areas and they have a laundry room. The hostel doesn't have much sound proofing on the windows so we heard quite a bit of noise like shouting in the mornings. For the price we paid we were fine with it and still had a good sleep.||||The closest metro is Tanzixiang which is about a 15 minute walk. There is lots of construction in the area or July 2021 so there are a few long walkarounds in the area but the sidewalk from the Tanzixiang station is pretty good. The hostel is also very close to Kunming train station for high speed trains.||||Loved our stay here and would recommend to friends...

Read moreWe booked two beds in the women's 6 bed dorm. It was probably the nicest hostel setup I've ever stayed at. Each bunk had its own fold out desk, two lights, nice heavy linens for winter, and a blackout curtain to pull completely across the bed, so you wouldn't get woken up by light in the morning. There were also locking cabinets for each bed, with key and lock provided. It felt secure and it was a nice touch. The heat/AC controls were also accessible, so when we checked in in the middle of the night in January, we were able to warm up the previously empty room quite quickly. The bathrooms are communal, but there are lots, with western toilets. The showers were also nice, with the changing area for each private stall having its own door as well as a shower curtain. It was all very clean. The only issue we had was that we were woken up by two male staff members who just opened the door and decided to fling open our balcony doors and have a chat for five minutes. At first I thought they wouldn't have realized we were there, as we'd checked in so late, but the curtains were drawn on two beds, so it should have been pretty clear that there were guests sleeping. Not long after, a cleaner came to clean the room, but it was around 8 AM for an 11 AM checkout, and we'd only been in our beds for about 4 hours, so we were a bit cranky. If there were other guests in the room who had checked out, it would have been understandable, but we were the only ones there. Overall, the facilities are lovely, and booking on their website was handy. It was fantastic that they were able to hold beds for us so late, to accommodate our redeye flight. However, the staff needs some basic training about when it's appropriate to go into the guest rooms. If you're booking online through their website, make sure to give the information for each guest, not only the one booking. When we booked, they only assigned one bed, though we asked for two, because they didn't have the name of the second guest. That was fine for us as they weren't near full occupancy and they just assigned another bed in the same room, but it could cause issues...
