The hotel is really charming, artful and has some wonderful qualities- especially the lovely verandas looking out over the lawn to the sea. They were delightful. Location was nice, right at entrance to waterfall. Some road noise but not too bad.
I would have liked to be able to give a better review, but honestly I wouldn’t choose to stay here again. We stayed on Monday and Tuesday night. It turns out that they do not serve breakfast on Tuesdays and the next morning we had to leave by 6:30am to catch our flight, so we were not able to enjoy a breakfast at the hotel. It would have been nice to know this before booking, as I would likely have chosen somewhere else to stay. But as it was, we were curtly informed - without any sort of apology or offer of discount- there would be no breakfast Tuesdays.
We stayed in Amopala room. It was cute with some thoughtful touches such as a french press and ground coffee, nice lighting, beautiful woodwork. Unfortunately there were also several downsides: the “queen” bed was definitely not queen sized- it was more like a double, and very hard in a not good way. There was an intense and pervasive musty odor to the room. If you have sensitivity to mold, I would recommend finding another lodging. I experienced significant congestion in the space, despite using the provided air purifier. There was also a very bright spotlight from the main common area aimed straight towards our room’s windows, that they kept on late into the night until all hotel guests had returned. It seems they could have not aimed it into one of the guestrooms or turned on a different lamp, especially after we alerted them to the issue.
I wanted to like this place more but these factors really stood out during our stay. Overall I felt like this hotel had potential to be amazing and really fell short on service, attention to detail, and...
Read moreAmor de mar is a special place! The high points:
-The office staff was amazing in planning our details like tours, taxis and food….before our stay AND during! All 3 of them were incredibly helpful and never made us feel like we were burdening them.
-everything is a 7-10 minute walk away: we did NOT rent any transportation.
-casa sol had ac in the upstairs which made it very easy to get a good nights sleep.
-we had a minor plumbing problem, and they had a guy there within MINUTES! Super fast!
-530am sunrises: worth it waking up every day and just siting in the garden.
-decent WiFi
-a very private tidal pool perfect for swimming right on the property!
-we felt very safe; didn’t even realize they had an overnight security person til we hung out with the night guard crew; they were pretty chill guys. -the grounds of the property are well maintained and gorgeous with all sorts of birds and wildlife: we saw iguana, lots of magpies, a tocanette and even a Jesus Lizard!
-if you appreciate woodworking, the Casa sol is a gorgeous tribute to the art: from the bar, to the stairway to the bathroom door, beautiful.
The Lows- It wasn’t perfect by any stretch.
It’s not real secluded or separate…it’s partially attached to the other casita….if there are loud people nextdoor, you will here them. There’s also all the mopeds, and four wheelers (road noise): you will hear all of them go by.
There was a bird. It had a nest in the roof of casa sol. It was loud. From 3:30am to 6am.
It gets humid downstairs….it’s hard to dry stuff off….towels in the bathroom never got really dry. It’s as if we were in the rainforest on the coast of a beach. 🤣
This is an honest review; but make no mistake, we would go back to amor de mar in a heartbeat, and we were so happy to stay there! It is an excellent value and we were treated...
Read moreMe and 3 friends all stayed here in January 2020. Hotel Amor de Mar has several rooms and two separate 2 storey chalets. We stayed in one called Casa Luna which was faultless. Smiling maids came by each day and cleaned up. I can’t comment on the other rooms but Casa Luna was the most perfect destination in a hotel that’s probably as close to heaven as I’ll get. It’s no more than 10 minutes stroll from Montezuma and we all appreciated its location. They serve delicious breakfast and lunch at the hotel and there’s many great dining opportunities locally. There’s a very spacious lawn area directly in front of the hotel which runs down to the Pacific which is dotted with hammocks and seating. The staff took care of any questions or needs, don’t hesitate to hit them up for any advice. Montezuma is essentially a two street town with all amenities although there was no ATM as of January 2020, but everybody seemed to take bank cards and it wasn’t a problem. We either cooked meals on the BBQ directly in front of our chalet or ate at their restaurant or in town. Everything we ate was delicious. We stayed for 10 nights and never got bored. Insects were a slight problem but I think that’s par for the course in any sub tropical destination. It certainly didn’t bother me. There’s amazing beaches to the left and right of the hotel and plenty more if you have wheels. You can cool down anytime in the sea, the large tide pool in front of the hotel or at the waterfall which is roughly a 10 - 15 minute walk directly behind Amor de Mar. Flip flops are not recommended for the hike to the waterfall but going there is a must since it’s the coolest temperature of any local body of water. Don’t delay, book today, it’s...
