The Mar Y Cielo is a great find if you are looking for an amazing location but don't mind a very basic room. The location really can’t be beat if you want to be on the ocean. You can sit on your patio and watch the waves crash in and listen to the sound of the sea in the dark. It is not right on the beach, but the town beach is right next to the parking area. In front of the hotel is beautiful rocks you can explore at low tide. You can also walk to the main beach in minutes from the room on the rocks or through town. There is a restaurant on the beach right next door for lunch or dinner on the beach. It really is wonderful. ||But, it may not be be for everyone. The rooms are very basic, are a little dark and old, no A/C, and are really more back packer than tourist. Tico families also stay there, some rooms have three beds so a larger family can stay. The showers were not always hot, but after a day in the hot sun a warm shower was a pleasure. It could be very hot at night and we used two floor fans to sleep, as well as the ceiling fan when we were in the room during the day. It is not so great to hang around the room, but it is great to sit on the patio and watch the ocean. The wifi is OK, I had troubles at some times, but mostly it worked.||Also, it can be noisy at night - Chico’s Bar is more or less next door and there can be music until 3 AM. It is not loud and pounding music, and it was not every night, but it was there. There is no idyllic quiet like in an out of town hotel. We stayed on the side of the building nearest Chico’s so it may not be so bad on the other end of the building. ||Parking is great - your own private parking area down a little narrow alley, right outside the building. Victor was very friendly and helpful. We were on the second floor which had great views - first floor rooms would not be as nice, but maybe they wold be cooler. The rooms have small basic fridges, which we very much appreciated, and a big safe. Don’t leave food out or your door open at night with the light on or you will attract bugs. It does not provide breakfast but there are several good places to eat within a few minute walk, which we preferred to having to eat in the same place every morning. ||It is right in the heart of Montezuma which we just loved. It is a very hip and chill town with several places to eat, a few souvenir shops and grocery stores which were well stocked. Lots of young hippies with glazed over looks hanging around the street selling hand made bracelets but it really had a gentle feel to it, not dark or edgy in any way. Some very good restaurants at nights, some only fair, but there is no lack of places to eat. Montezuma is very close to many wonderful beaches and the famous waterfall, all within walking distance. No banks or gas stations, stock up in Cobano, but every place takes credit cards, contrary to what some travel books say. Also easy to drive to Malpais or Santa Theresa, but frankly, Montezuma is much more pleasant, so save the time and hang out in Montezuma. It may also be a great break from Jaco - there is a water taxi service that lands on the beach in front of the hotel and you don’t need a car, so you may want to take a break from the big tourist town for a small laid...
Read moreI have been to Montezuma several times, it’s my favourite destination. I’ve stayed at many local hotels, but this was my first time staying at Mar Y Cielo. I was not sure of this spot based on other reviews saying the Chico’s bar next door is very loud at night to sleep. I did not experience this, all I heard was the ocean waves crashing on the rocks. However, I was there on a Monday night and honestly the bar is only loud on Friday and Saturday nights from what I noticed. But I don't think you would hear much because the ocean waves at night are quite loud. ||||The reception for Mar Y Cielo is at the souvenir gift shop before you follow a laneway to the ocean and where the cabinas are and vehicle parking. I was greeted by a very super friendly Tico woman named, Nury and she instantly makes you feel welcomed and comfortable. ||||There was four rooms, 2 on top with balconies and 2 below. All the rooms face the ocean. My room was below and because it’s all concrete, you don’t hear the guests above walking around, it was surprisingly very quiet. ||||My room was very clean, I saw no bugs (cockroaches), and there was no moldy smell like some of the other budget hotels. There was no air conditioner, but the room never felt hot with the ocean breeze and 2 large powerful stand-up fans in the room. There is a large safe in the room to put your valuables and was big enough to fit a backpack. Also included was your own large bar fridge, coffee maker and pre-ground coffee with cups. Awesome for the next morning.||||This hotel is located right near all the shops, restaurants, ATM (You can only withdraw 100,000 colones at a time) and the beach. But is quiet because it is at the end of a laneway from the main road. They have hammocks and a table with benches to lounge around, which was great to use once the sun got lower in the sky and it wasn’t so hot. Perfect for late afternoon and evening time.||||This hotel was easy to book through Bookings.com for $60 US/night, I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend this place. Thank-you Nury for an excellent...
Read moreThe cabins are small and quite basic with no wardrobes or drawer space, so expect literally to live from your suitcase. The room we stayed was at ground level with direct access to a small garden of tropical plants and a selection of 3/4 hammocks and an outside BBQ area. The garden literally meets the shore line and at high tide, the sea is genuinely at the garden perimeter. If you want the sound of the sea, a stunning view without any obstacles blocking your line of sight, literally straight out to the Pacific - then this is the place for you. What more could you ask, a hammock swinging in the palms looking out to the ruby red sunset over the Pacific Ocean... this is bliss!||||As said, the room we stayed was basic and limited space, but very clean, comfortable and two large fans provided with a fridge and a coffee maker and a safe. Bathroom is functional and clean and the shower is adequate. Nothing to complain about - just a very beautiful location and a clean, tidy room and a very friendly owner.||||Check in at the souvenir shop on arrival by the side of the small alley way next to the small grocery supermarket. There is a great bar open late close by called 'Bar Chicos' which has a late night licence but the music wasn't a problem. We were here slightly off season in November and I was told that Montezuma does become a lot busier in peak season and the cabins can get full quickly. There are other choices of cabin, with three beds and a little more space and an apartment to the rear but without the stunning views. Security guard at night, very friendly, watched over the apartments but to be honest I saw no crime or problems, in fact there's no police in Montezuma - just a chilled, laid back, very friendly bunch of locals, always helpful. The beaches are literally at your doorstep, a few restaurants and shops but everything is on the small size in Montezuma. We will certainly be back, this is truly a little piece of paradise.||Great value for money. Thanks Nury, Gracias and...
