DO NOT STAY HERE Upon my arrival at Hostel One Love I was informed that there was no water. According to Carlos (manager? Owner?) the lack of water was a district wide issue that occurs often without notice. He assured me the water would be back but could not make guarantees as to when (not helpful). The following day I woke up with the hopes of a shower but the water was not back. After a full day of being out at the beach and in the rain, I got back to the hostel around 5pm to find the hostel still did not have running water. Curiosity struck as to whether this was truly a district wide issue since throughout the day I had seen businesses running with fully functional bathrooms. I inquired with local hotels and hostels, some just a few blocks away to find that yes in fact every place I called had running water. I approached Carlos to discuss my concern and discuss the possibility of the third night’s refund as I had found a place with water and wanted to transfer there (I was not asking for a refund on the two days for which I had used the room) Carlos said he had to “run to the store” and when he came back he would be willing to talk about the possibility of a refund. When he returned from the store suddenly the water was back on. Strange. Problem solved and I was able to shower (24 hours after my arrival). This same night (my second night) there was a bad storm and we lost power and again no water. That morning again, I approached Carlos to check out early and get a refund for the third day. Carlos said he’d consider but that he needed to shower (how?!?! How did he have water but not anybody else?!) Again he wanted time to consider the refund. After some time I approached him to discuss the matter as I was ready to just return to San José given the circumstances. Carlos refused to discuss the matter and tried to close the door on me, MULTIPLE TIMES. Is running water too much to ask for? He handled this so poorly. I understand the circumstances of the storm were beyond his control but his attitude in handling the situation is disappointing. Needless to say after he shut the door on me I left and no refund was given. The hostel itself is in poor condition. The kitchen is dirty but maybe this is the case with most hostels. The location is far from the center of town as well. Wish I had done better research as there are so many more options available in much better shape for relative prices! I ended up staying in Puerto Viejo, not returning to San José, and finding a really adorable hotel for $45/night very close to the beach where they were...
Read moreDON’T STAY HERE. We stayed here for two nights which were supposed to be three. For the whole two days we were there, there was no running water whatsoever. The owner, Carlos, said that no one in the city had water. That was a lie we called multiple other hotels and hostels who ALL had water. It was very warm because the fans did little to nothing. The kitchen area was not clean as well. On the second day of no water we told Carlos we wanted to leave and wanted our money back for the final night that we wouldn’t be staying there. He said he needed to think about it and we gave him 30 minutes. After 30 minutes we went back to speak with him since we needed to leave to catch our bus. He said that he still needed time got hostile and tired to shut the door on us multiple times before slamming it in our face. He was extremely disrespectful and would NEVER recommend someone...
