It was my first time visiting Brno (the wife has visited previously). We'd stayed in an Orea in Mariánské Lázně last year, one of their spa hotels, and it was very nice; so we picked an Orea again. There are two very large Orea hotels right next to each other, one seems to be aimed at business guests and has more facilities, the other is a family hotel with less facilities (although you can use the facilities of the hotel next door) if you're a guest at the Voronez II. Both hotels are a little brutalist on first impressions, in that kind of 1950's communist, concrete cladded block kind of way. Don't let this put you off too much though. The hotel is not in a central location, which we knew and didn't bother us. It might however be an issue for some. It's right next to the very large Brno exhibition complex and the whole area has a bit of a trading estate vibe about it. It isn't very difficult to get to the city centre though. It's a short walk to a nearby tram stop and one could even walk to the city centre if one didn't mind a long stroll. The hotel is fairly modern inside and clean and tidy throughout. Reception was helpful and welcoming. Our room was spacious enough with plenty of wardrobe space, several chairs and a table. The double bed was okay, not the most comfortable in the world, but fine enough for a few days. The bathroom was clean and tidy, although the shower curtain and it's rusty rings looked like it had seen better days. I really couldn't tell if the extraction fan was working, but this is par for the course I find in some hotels. There was the same issue in this bathroom as in our previous Orea experience, for some reason they don't have a fitting to hang the shower head from. I don't really understand why. It means one has to perform the awkward, squatting in the bath, position to have a shower. There was a bin in the main room, which was a plus. Sometimes hotels don't give you a bin in the main room and you're stuck with only having the tiny bathroom bin. Our room was at the back of the hotel. It was very hot over the Easter weekend in Moravia and so we had the windows open. I find all hotel rooms, whatever hotel you're staying in, to be exceedingly hot any time of the year; regardless of whether they have air-conditioning or not (this room didn't). The hotel is in a fairly quiet part of Brno and not really on a main road, which is good. However our stayed coincided with one early morning delivery one day, and the bins being emptied early the next morning; so it was a little disturbing on the sleep side. Other than that it was fine. Hotel T.V. Why are hotel television services so exceptionally rubbish in this day and age of digital T.V. and internet television services. I don't think I've ever stayed in a hotel that ever had a good television service and unfortunately the Orea's in Brno was one of the worst. Hardly any Czech channels were tuned, and some that were had terrible reception. We were stuck with CT 1 and Nova as our only real choices. Yeah I know what you're thinking, you're on holiday mister, why are you watching television? Well come on, it's okay to watch a bit before one goes to bed to catch up on a few programmes one might be missing. There's also a tendency in the Czech Republic for several German channels to be tuned, but mostly these consist of shopping channels or boring 24 hour news channels. Come on hotels of the world, you really can do better when it comes to hotel television. The hotel has W-fi-, which I did not use, so can't comment on. The breakfast restaurant was great (they only offer breakfast at this hotel). There was the usual ample continental smörgåsbord that we British (and the Germans) so love filling up on. Overall this hotel is a good choice for staying in for short breaks to Brno if you don't mind being out of the centre and you only require breakfast and not evening meals. I would...
Read moreThis is a good place to stay if you don’t want to stay in the centre. It’s a short walk to tram stop to get just about anywhere. The reception was modern and staff helpful and spoke good English. Don’t forget you will need to pay city tax but it’s not exorbitant. 2 lifts to upper floors. The bedroom was a little dated but clean and well supplied. Needs were 2 singles which can be pushed together which is a European standard. Nice to have couple of comfy chairs and table in room. Good size cupboards. Fridge is useful. There is a safe which I didn’t use. Nice to have tea and coffee making stuff. I was in 204 which was on back of hotel and had a balcony. Couldn’t get the tv to work but I am sure reception would have sorted-I didn’t bother as I am sure progs are in Czech which I don’t speak. The heating works well but was a bit warm for me so opened patio door. The hand shower as well as the bath takes a while to warm up. If using bath the plug didn’t seal well but I carry one which did work.|Breakfast was plentiful with both hot and cold options. Plates etc cleared promptly. Choice of teas/coffees and juice. You can order drinks from bar and minor snacks but for lunch or dinner you need to go next door for sister hotel. |Happy to stay...
Read moreOrea Hotel Voronez has to be the worst travel experience I’ve endured. Booked the room on Hotels.com and showed 4 available rooms. The person checking me in, Tomas, was angry I’d used Hotels.com as they were booked. I was advised I’d have a room with no air conditioning. Ok. Can live with that. But||||1st floor room overlooked the main entry. So opening the window had a wonderful aroma of cigarette and diesel exhaust from the tour buses. The room was sparse. Basic. No kettle. No coffee maker. Nothing. Fortunately it did have towels. ||||All night you could hear water flushing from the above rooms. It was quite calming to hear the whoosh of water being launched. ||||Then the late evening tour bus arrival. So special. The sound of people stomping in the room above. ||||It was also a handicap room, which I didn’t need. ||||Breakfast was mediocre. Eggs over cooked. The two areas are unprepared to handle the flow of people from the tours. Very little for breakfast as compared to their other resort property I’ve stayed at. ||||Couple all this with the hostility and anger displayed by Tomas during checking in, I’d advise staying elsewhere. This stay was truly...
