We were in Avignon during their music and theater festival and were lucky enough to get a room at the well-located Hotel de Cambis. Our arrival was very stressful - we foolishly decided to drive and drop off our luggage before returning our rental car to the TGV station. Due to the festival, we ended up around the corner from the hotel entrance on a street that technically was closed to cars. After I took our first bag to the lobby, the desk clerk came out, walked to the car and helped me carry the remaining bags (while my husband explained our car’s presence to a gendarme). When we later returned to the hotel, our bags were already in the room, a tremendous relief on a hot and frantic day.||The room was spacious and the a/c really good, which was wonderful on 99 degree days. The breakfast (9 euros pp) was plentiful with decent selection. There is a lovely, comfortable salon on the second floor by the breakfast room where they serve afternoon tea and snacks. We spent time there reading and relaxing. ||Nice bathroom, good shower. Very little noise from inside the hotel but our window faced a lively street. If that is a concern, you might ask for a room on the quiet side. The street the hotel entrance was on was very nice, with lovely boutiques and lots of options for food. Easy walk to all the sights of Avignon. There were grocery stores, a pharmacy and a boulangerie close by.||All the staff were terrific and helpful....
Read moreFirst, the location was excellent- on the main street in the nice area of town. WE had an issue that was remedied by the staff. We were given a room on the 4th floor (maybe 406?), in a kind of exclusive part of the hotel as we had to take an elevator to the 3rd floor and then another elevator. Unbeknownst to me, our room was a suite with a separate room adjacent to the main bedroom . There was a fireplace in the room and we had a huge balcony. The view from the balcony and the suite was fantastic.|However, the room had a bad smell. It smelled like sewage. We hesitated but decided to stay. The next day we moved. The smell was too much! The staff seemed to be aware of the sewage smell but claimed it is not always there.|In any case, we were given another room on the 3rd floor, not a suite but quite large, no balcony but a fireplace. The view was still beautiful. This room had no bad smell. |Just be aware.|Breakfast wasn't included in our rate but we decided to eat there anyway. It was plentiful. Fresh breads and bread products, an assortment of cheeses, ham, eggs and bacon. You can also make your own freshly squeezed OJ. we felt that the 16 euro price was reasonable for the quality. Overall, all positive, but the awful smell they need to...
Read moreI've been blessed with being able to stay in many fine hotels, both 3 and 4 stars. The Hotel De Cambis is a 4 star hotel that, to me aspires to be a 3 star hotel. From the tired look of the rooms to the cheapest toilet paper that wouldn't look out of place in a dingy backstreet cafe. Apologises to those cafes pushing the envelope with their upmarket loo rolls. Breakfast needs to be attended on the dot or else you will be left with a reduced selection of choices. I asked for a boiled egg as the section was empty, only to be told there were none left as an earlier family had taken the lot. This also happened with the fruit. The staff on reception are wonderful and really helpful and the hotel location is excellent, close to the town centre and also the train station. Avignon itself is a truly wonderful place to visit, full of amazing attractions and shopping opportunities. Our 3 star hotel in Aix-en-Provence could teach this place a few tricks. Just my opinion of course, I note from the reviews other patrons loved it immensely. I'm...
