Iris Hotel — Hotel in Municipality of Rhodes

We stayed at the Iris (so named because the Hotel is covered in Iris flowers) in Afantou, Rhodes for 2 weeks in August 2019 with our children aged 6 & 12. I used Trip Advisor to help make the decision which is why I've decided to leave this review. ||||Note - be careful that the reviews you are reading apply to the actual place you're looking at - I found a number of reviews which seemed to be about The Iris but were actually for a place in Kos (not Rhodes).||||First things first - we booked with Onthebeach.com - it was less than £2500 for the 4 of us including flights from Leeds/Bradford airport. With fears over the exchange rate I was quite budget conscious and also made sure to book half board so nearly all our food was included. Onthebeach offered airport/Hotel transfers for £125 but I took a taxi from the airport and it had a fixed price of €37. Return was a bit more at €42 so a good saving compared with £125.||||I've emphasised the budget aspects so far - we tend to explore quite a lot on holiday and in 2017 & 18 visited South Africa, Finland, Malta and the North of Scotland. We don't accept low standards but understand that you get what you pay for. What we wanted on this occasion was 2 weeks of sunshine and we barely saw a cloud the whole time we were in Rhodes.||||Air Conditioning was extra (€60/week). In the first room the air conditioning unit failed straight away so we were moved to another room where the A/C worked perfectly for the whole holiday. A/C is essential in my view so you should budget to pay the extra. I can understand why it is chargeable as Brits tend to leave it on all the time and it will obviously consume quite a lot of electricity - we tried to remember to turn it off when we left the room in the day but kept it on at night. The room itself had a double bed and a pair of bunks as well as a shower room and working fridge. As described in other reviews it was fairly basic but I didn't go on holiday to spend my time in the bedroom and i always slept ok.||||The pool was great, clean and a decent size - you could always get a sunbed and there is a play area for younger kids. There is a selection of inflatables available which everybody shares.||||Food in the form of breakfast and evening meal buffets was absolutely fine - all edible, fresh fruit & vegetables available and pretty much as you'd expect on holiday. Snacks & pizzas were available at lunchtime also. Dining was all al fresco at the edge of the pool.||||The bar was well stocked - highlights were pints of local lager served in a frozen glass (€3) and half litre carafes of dry white wine from Rhodes at €5. Spirits were a bit more pricey with cocktails or vodka/orange etc at €7.||||Staff were very friendly including Dmitri behind the bar and George the owner and his wife who were very helpful and generous.||||We hired a car on a couple of occasions - this was €55/day when booked at reception. Although we booked a FIAT Panda we were given an older FIAT Punto which was absolutely fine. We travelled one day around the south of the island including the historic city of Lindos which is a must see. We finished off on the West of the island and watched the sunset. The other day we hired a car we went to the north of the island and visited Rhodes town which was also a great way to spend half the day. We then visited Kalimbia beach (a little to the South of Afantou) which is really picturesque and has a couple of good restaurants. This can also be reached by bus or by taxi (which we used on another day - but return worked out at around €30 so not much less than hiring a car).||||Another day we took the cruise to Turkey which meant an early start (with Taxi pick-up from the Hotel) and I was able to watch the sunrise (something I very rarely do). This cruise was a bit hurried as the journey was 3 hours each way and we only had 3 hours actually in Turkey (Fethiye). A lot of people had only really gone for the cheap shopping so it was ok for them. We visited ancient tombs and an abandoned Greek village and also crammed in lunch (which was very good). On the way back we could see flying fish and we were told that other people had also seen Dolphins.||||We ate out a good few times on Rhodes as well - my youngest son is a sea food fanatic and very much enjoyed roasted octopus, prawns/shrimps and fish. There is a very good sea food restaurant called 'Shark' on the beach about a mile from the Hotel.||||The village of Afantou is quite close to the Hotel (10 minutes walk) and has a range of useful shops, a Post Office, bars & restaurants. There is a bar showing Sky Sports. The Skyline bar is also highly recommended with lovely food and great views.||||Lastly the beach at Afantou is very long and very nice, it's 20-30 minutes walk and the sun was very hot but you can have a dip when you get there and there's also a beach bar. The sea does shelve away quite sharply so I wasn't overly keen on spending time there with my youngest who has only recently learned to swim. However - he spent so much time in the pool that he came back a much better swimmer than he went. There is a Supermarket half way between the Hotel and the beach.||||Overall - if you want a sunny holiday as we did this is perfectly adequate in every way and George in particular made us feel very welcome. If you want a 'resort' type holiday with entertainment, karaoke, aqua-robics etc there are plenty in the Kalimbia beach area but you will easily end up spending 3 times as much - for me it wouldn't be worth it. This reference is written on two languages – Russian and English.||Мы отдыхали в Iris с 29 июня по 13 июля 2018 г. в номере 106 всей семьей – я, супруга и двое детей, по системе «все включено».||Нам очень понравился сам Родос и отель Iris в частности.||Обильное и вкусное питание, вино, оливки, вежливый персонал, чистый бассейн с лежаками и зонтиками, детская площадка, зелень кругом, море и солнце – что еще нужно для отдыха.||Прогулка до моря с детьми занимала 20 минут, но не скажу, что она была слишком утомительной.||В 5 минутах от гостиницы, как раз по дороге на море, есть большой супермаркет. Недалеко от отеля – остановка автобуса, можно поехать в город Родос или в Линдос.||На пляже есть бесплатный душ; туалет за добровольные пожертвования. Лежаки платные, но мы обходились подстилкой (это – бесплатно). ||Рекомендую отель для тихого отдыха (зрелищных и громких мероприятий поблизости нет).||Отель 3 звездочки всегда уступает более высококлассным отелям. Но мы знали, на что шли, и это не было проблемой. ||Также в отеле нет кондиционируемых холлов. Мы почувствовали это в последний день, когда пришлось покинуть номер и 6 часов обитать вне его в ожидании автобуса в аэропорт. Можно было заплатить за номер на эти 6 часов, но цена показалась нам слишком высокой. ||Перед входом в отель – достаточно крутой подъем около ста метров. Пожилым людям и маленьким детям нужно иметь в виду. ||Кондиционер в номере – платный (60 евро в неделю), интернет – платный – 30 евро за 2 недели (но скорость нормальная). Все игры в холле – платные. Питание за время отсутствия не компенсируется (экскурсии, поездки и т.п.).||Я в целом доволен персоналом – администратором Джорджем, поваром Маркусом, любезным молодым официантом с бородой и другими сотрудниками гостиницы. Передаю им мой привет и благодарность.||We had the rest in Iris from 29th, June to 13th, July, 2018 in room No 106 by whole family – me, my wife, and two children, according to “all inclusive” system. ||We enjoy Rodos and Iris hotel in particular. Plentiful and taste food, vine, olives, polite staff, pure swimming pool with sun beds and umbrellas, children playground, greens around, sea and sun – what more for relaxing ||Walking to sea with children took 20 minutes, but it was not too tiresome. ||There is a big supermarket in 5 minutes trip from hotel, on the way to sea. Bus stop is near hotel, it is possible to go to Rodos city and to LIndos. ||There is free shower on the beach, rest room is for voluntary donation. Sun beds are payable, but we managed with beach laying (it is free). ||I recommend this hotel for quiet rest (no noisy actions around). ||3 star hotel is always more modestly than high class hotels. But we were ready for this and it was not the problem. ||There is no conditioned public area in hotel. We felt it in last day, when we had to leave the room and be out of it within 6 hours, have been waiting for bus to airport. It was possible to pay for room for these 6 hours, but price seemed to us as too high. ||There is steep slope enough for more than 50 meters in front of entrance to hotel. It is necessary to have it into consideration for old people and little child. ||Room conditioner is payable (60 euro a week), WiFi – payable (30 euro for two weeks, but speed is enough). All games in hotel are payable. В отель Ирис мы попали по системе "фортуна 3". Территория отеля очень ухожена, цветут деревья, идеальные газоны. Из окон открывается вид в сотону моря. Море примерно в километре ходьбы, но нам было ок, ходили мы пешком первый и последний день, а ходить мы любим)); а в остальные дни была машина в аренде. К слову, машину брать рекомендую, поскольку посмотреть на острове есть что. Если без, тогда рядом с отелем остановка автобусов. Отель очень спокойный. Есть небольшой бассейн, достаточно чистый, но большую часть лежаков около него нужно  обновить, потому что они сильно продавлены.||Слева от отеля есть отличный супермаркет с хорошим ассортиментом сыров и колбасных изделий, оливок, халвы, масла и других вкусностей.||||Питание:||Мы заказывали завтраки и ужины. В ресторане всегда чисто, аккуратно. Завтраки стандартные и сытные: всегда есть яйца вареные, омлет 2х видов, яичница; кабачки на гриле (мммм, за них особенное спасибо!), фасоль, колбаса, сосиски, сыр, фета, сладости, мюсли, выпечка, нутелла, мёд и т.д. и обязательно слоеный пирог с сыром.||||Ужины: восторг. (Напоминаю, это 3Греция)). За 9 дней ни разу не повторился ужин! Каждый вечер есть горячее мясное блюдо и куриное, либо индейка, иногда рыба. Гарниры прекрасные и на любой вкус: паста с соусом, овощи гриль, картошка фри, запечёная, фасоль стручковая в соусе, рис либо с травами, либо с мидиями, драники овощные, и прочие которые я не помню уже. ||Кроме того, слоеный пирог со шпинатом, 2 вида салатов, фета, фрукт 1 вид, сладости.||И готовят местное блюдо: пастиция, или гирос и т.д.||Повар Маркус и его помощники готовят потрясающе, спасибо! Невозможно всё попробовать, всё вкусно и много!||||В баре можно купить напитки, домашнее вино белое мне понравилось. Бармен Димитрий очень симпатичный любезный молодой человек. Спасибо ему.||||Персонал отеля приветлив, если возникают сложности, помогают решать.||||Сантехника вся работает хорошо, с горячей водой проблем не было.||||Отель хороший. Есть только несколько моментов которые портят впечатление.||Уборка. Она заключается в том, что каждый день протирают пол в комнате и кладут новый рулон бумаги. В ванной за 9 дней махнули тряпкой 2 раза.||Сантехнику не моют совсем. Я даже однажды написала записку на английском с просьбой это сделать, но ее наверное не смогли прочитать, а тому кто умеет на английском не показали. Мы поддерживали чистоту сами, сначала ждали что вот скоро помоют, может этот номер давно не сдавался.. но нет. И потом уже не хотелось тратить время на объяснения хозяину как должно быть. Сами помыли. ||||Мебель в номерах не новая но аккуратная и всё по делу. Всё удобно. Но опять же хорошо бы раз в месяц хотя бы пылесосить изголовье кровати, кровать под матрасом и протирать лампы от пыли. ||||Постельное белье и полотенца меняют примерно раз в три дня. И белье и полотенца не белоснежные, но приходят выглажеными из прачечной, но смотрите внимательно, бывают пятна. Пару раз ходили меняли. Вообще, и белье и полотенце пора бы уже обновить)) ||||То же касается бильярдных киев. Они совершенно разломаны. А жаль, с удовольствием бы играли.||||Ну и платный дорогой wifi удивил нас. ||||А в целом отель расположен красиво, тихий, всё что нужно для отдыха. Будет классно, если хозяева испульзуют весь его потенциал к следующему сезону, и тогда может быть гостей будет больше....
