I will have to echo what another western female traveller has said. The staff are aggressively in your face. I had dinner there one evening and the waiter was literally interrogating me about my India stay even though past polite conversation, I made it abundantly clear that I want to spend my time in peace. He finally left only for the one serving me to refuse to leave, he kept on trying to arrange various pieces of food and trying to explain to me how to eat naan bread!!! I think they are hugely unaware of international standards and this is their idea of hospitality. whilst enjoying my food, which was very tasty, every five minutes I would get another member of staff asking me if I want to order other things. I am a healthy female and have ordered a regular meal so I really couldn't understand. Every time I was sat in the lobby girls just standing there to supposedly guide guests would come and make me feel unwelcome every few minutes by asking intrusive questions as to who I am waiting for and whatnot. I am a paying guest enjoying the lobby.
Lastly, the spa was fine, although the quality of the massage was inferior to what I had experienced in Mumbai. The spa is beautiful and brand new. However, you are being treated as if you're an incompetent idiot who cannot even open the door. After my massage, I had mentioned I will go to the sauna. They take you there and treat you as if you're under surveillance. They don't even allow you to open the door and go into the sauna. Once in the sauna, finally peace, I thought. Then the server once again knocks to give me water. Fine. I try to come out of the sauna and walk to the steam room only for this woman to jump right in front of me, push me and then open the door for me as to show she is doing her job. I was dreading going to the spa, an experience I normally love and something I always look for when I book a hotel.
Overall, it's probably still the best hotel in Pune, but their take on hospitality is a poor and provincial attempt at what should be international standards with a...
Read moreCaveats to offer: I am from the US, a first timer in India and am accustomed to Western standards of customer service. I stayed here for a work trip (not on my own dime), so I cannot really comment on the value proposition. It offered what I needed for a business trip. All in all the hotel is ok. It is clearly very luxurious by local standards (maybe more of a 4* by international standards).
The upsides are the delicious food (love the breakfast buffet and Chinese restaurant) and soundproofing in the rooms. The bed is comfortable and wifi strong. I had a mountain view room which offered a great view.
Unfortunately I do have a few criticisms: The customer service is VERY much in your face and aggressive by Western standards, and added an element of stress for me that was unwelcome. I think this is a cultural difference but it definitely made me uncomfortable. The hotel (or Marriott as a company) might do well to train their staff on adapting their approach to the visitor, for example, do not approach someone with earbuds in, who is working or otherwise busy. I think the customized approach based on the person is exemplary customer service, instead of assuming all guests want to be waited on hand and foot. We are all people at the end of the day, no need to be overbearingly attentive to me just because I am a foreigner. No place to fill my own water bottle with purified water. They do offer bottled water service, but I honestly don't want to have to ask someone to bring more water to my room. Same with coffee - no self service option available, don't want to ask someone to bring me some. Styling of the interior a bit dated, particularly in the guest rooms. No fan in the guest room bathroom, meaning the room is very humid...
