Further Hotel Bali: Brutalist Beauty Meets Boutique Bafflement.
If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping inside a concrete sculpture while pretending you’re in a Wes Anderson film set in a tropical dystopia—good news! Further Hotel in Pererenan, Bali, is your dream come true. Designed by the architectural minds at MORQ and styled by Studio Wenden, this “diffused hotel” spreads across four sites (we only foudn 2 though).
Design: 5/5 – Brutalist Chic with a Side of Instagram
The rooms are a masterclass in moody minimalism: blackened timber, stone, leather, and cocciopesto plaster finishes. Beds are sunken into the floor, and bathrooms feature semi-open layouts.
Comfort: 3/5 – Style Over Snooze
While the aesthetics are on point, comfort takes a backseat. The rooms are undeniably chic, but space is at a premium. If you’re traveling with more than a carry-on, prepare to play suitcase Tetris. The pillows are firm enough to double as yoga blocks, which led to a migraine for me. No pillow menu here, so bring your own if you’re particular. if you value your beauty sleep, opt for a room with a private pool. These are located on the quieter side of the building, away from the main street and its charming ensemble of power lines. Nothing kills the vibe like resting your head a few meters from high-voltage cables. The so-called “pool” is more of a decorative water feature—a small, murky basin that lacks both heat and jets. It’s like a hot tub that gave up on its dreams. We gave it a hard pass. On the plus side, guests get complimentary passes to The Wrong Gym nearby, which offers hot and cold plunge facilities. BUT we found out about it AFTER we checked out :(
Food: 1/5 – Breakfast Blues
Breakfast is served on the rooftop, but the offerings were underwhelming. In a land where culinary delights abound, the morning meal here felt like a missed opportunity. We stuck to coffee and juice after the first day. Dinner at Bar Vera, the hotel’s downstairs restaurant, was a different story. The Parisian-inspired cuisine was delightful, making it a worthwhile spot for an evening meal.
Staff: 3/5 – Friendly but Flustered
The staff were warm and welcoming, but not particularly resourceful. When we asked for help booking a spa appointment, the gentleman at reception suggested an in-room massage. A bit awkward given the room size. It's like trying to do yoga in a phone booth.
Location: 3/5 – Close to the Action, but Choose Wisely
Pererenan is a lively neighborhood, just a short walk from Canggu and about a 20-minute stroll to the beach. However, the local beach was our least favorite in Bali—littered and lacking the charm of other coastal spots
FINAL VERDICT Design: 5/5 – A visual masterpiece. Comfort: 3/5 – Stylish but not entirely restful. Food: 1/5 – Skip breakfast; enjoy dinner. Staff: 3/5 – Kind but not particularly helpful. Location 3/5- Busy

Read moreI had a wonderful stay at Further Hotel Canggu! From the moment we booked, all communication was handled seamlessly via WhatsApp, making the process smooth and hassle-free.
We arrived early, and though our room wasn’t ready, the staff went above and beyond by offering a buggy service to a nearby café where we could work comfortably until check-in. We could also request buggy services to take us wherever we wanted to go within a reasonable distance from the hotel, which was super convenient.
The hotel has a unique rustic charm, with narrow wooden stairs leading up to the rooms. There was a distinct woody scent along the way, which added to the mysterious and classy atmosphere—apparently, it comes from the walls? Such a cool touch!
Upon check-in, a friendly staff member escorted us to our room, giving us a detailed tour of its features and amenities. The design is well thought out—the toilet and shower area are hidden behind a wall, creating a minimalist and modern aesthetic. One of the standout features is the sunken bed, set into a carved-out space in the floor. It was incredibly soft and cozy, with extra pillows provided, ensuring two nights of fantastic sleep.
A welcome drink and coconut-flavored nougat were a lovely touch. The shower is open concept, separated by roof tiles and a glass panel, adding to the boutique experience. Water refills are provided in glass bottles, and a mini fridge is available in the room. One thing to note - there isn’t a TV in the room, but in today’s day and age, who needs a TV?
While there is no pool on-site, the hotel has partnered with various businesses to offer guests access to pools, gyms, and discounts at nearby restaurants and cafés—great for exploring Canggu!
A couple of things to note: Ongoing construction means there’s some noise during the day. The walls are quite thin, so conversations from the hallway can be heard inside the room.
Overall, the service was excellent, and the unique design of the hotel made for a truly memorable stay. Would highly recommend it for those looking for a stylish and cozy boutique...
Read moreA deeply disappointing stay. Our group booked three rooms, only to find upon arrival that they were located in two separate buildings far apart from each other—so far, in fact, that we had to take a shuttle between them. This was extremely inconvenient for us, and to make matters worse, the annex building had no facilities like a swimming pool or other amenities.
We arrived at the hotel at 1:50 PM. Initially, we were told check-in was at 2:00 PM. But when we returned at 2:00, we were informed that the standard check-in time was actually 3:00 PM. The rooms had terrible sound insulation—it felt like we were sleeping in the middle of a highway. Motorbikes roared past all night long, and even with earplugs, the noise was unbearable.
One friend’s air conditioner broke the first night. It was repaired, only to break again the following evening. The bed design prioritized aesthetics over comfort or practicality—each bed had a raised wooden frame that we all ended up bumping into. Several of us had bruises on our legs. If the hotel has money to spend on decorative bed frames, why not invest in proper soundproofing instead?
On the second night, the noise wasn’t just from the street—shockingly, the hotel’s own café downstairs started renovation work after 10:30 PM.
To top it off, one friend was repeatedly asked by staff to leave a good review during checkout—even though he had clearly had a bad experience. Out of politeness, he didn’t refuse directly. When it was our turn to check out, we had to carry our luggage down a set of stairs ourselves. Staff stood inside the doorway, watching us struggle without offering any assistance.
All in all, the hotel’s facilities and service quality fall far short of the premium rates they charge. I was the one who recommended this hotel to our group, and I feel genuinely sorry for putting my friends through such a...
