Residence Castiglione — Hotel in Castiglione del Lago

I last reviewed the Residence Castiglione in 2013 and thought I would do an update. I have stayed here most years since 1994 so that in itself is a huge tick for this great apartment hotel. Apart from the location why do I keep coming back? Well Ivanella and her husband make you feel so welcome.||||Walking distance from the charming hilltown of Castiglione del Lago (10 mins uphill). and the lakeside is about 100m away. There is a lovely pool and garden with plenty of loungers. It is a lovely spot to relax or if you prefer there is a beach by the lake, but then you won’t get the occasional surprise of free ice cream.||||Ivanella is very kind and helpful and makes every effort to put guests at their ease. Many of the guests have also been going for years - some stay for several weeks, others just a few days. Nothing is too much trouble from advice on restaurants, where to shop and information on the various tourist spots or to help with a crisis.||||This apartment hotel has studios, 1-2 bedroom apartments or bedrooms on their own (most have air conditioning). The decoration is bright and airy and refreshed annually. The studios or apartments have a kitchenette with everything you need to make your stay comfortable. There are drying racks available outside if you need to hang out clothes or beach towels to dry.||||Continental breakfast is available and there’s also a small bar to buy cold drinks , beer and other alcoholic beverages. For those that want to cook/eat in, there are supermarkets close by.||||This is a wonderful spot for couples, friends or families, but good for someone travelling alone as well. ||||Room tip: All the rooms are fine, so it depends on the type of accommodation you want. We stayed here for a couple of days. We were welcomed with a cold drink and some fruit, which was most welcome after our journey. The rooms were quite basic, but had everything we needed, including a mini kitchen which was very useful and a fridge. There were tables and chairs outside the rooms, and somewhere to hang damp clothes. The lake was only a few minutes walk away and the town, where the shops and restaurants were was about a 10 minute walk, up a fairly steep hill.||We used the pool several times, although it was a little chilly, and my husband and daughter went out on their bikes.||On the first morning at breakfast they had put a banner on the table, as it was my birthday, and they gave me a little gift, which was so lovely of them. Breakfast was brought to the table, and was always varied and fresh. This place has everything you could need. The room was very comfortable and large with a large table and a kitchen in a cupboard! No oven, but very thoughtfully done if you wanted to self cater. There is a very well cared for pool and garden. The really outstanding feature is the proprietor. Ivanella could not have been more helpful! She is wonderful. I am gluten intolerant and she went to great lengths to buy in breakfast foods I could eat. She gave us wonderful advice about the Umbrian hill towns to see and furnished us with maps and booklets. Such a friendly, delightful person. Nothing was too much trouble for her. The place is located just minutes walk from the lake. We loved this area of Umbria and Tuscany and, if we manage to return, will stay there again. ...
