Bad: Exceptionally bad experience with employee, Helio. Ruined the Anda brand for me. Talked to manager Julia 4/11.
Update April 15, Paola Bolgan did not take complaint seriously. Cannot recommend.
No air conditioning in the rooms, but everywhere else was fine? According to reception, in Venice, they can't turn on A/C until May due to an energy conservation law? I did not have this issue in Milan or Genova last week. Both rooms 1st & 2nd floor.
Inside room temperature was AT LEAST 26°C/78.8°F AFTER sunset (hotter during day) and I visited from Sunday April 9th to Thursday April 13th when it was cool outside (12-18°C/53.6-64.4°F).
Frustrating when outside & hallway is significantly cooler (23°C/73.4°F) and leaving door open for an hour doesn't help. Window (1) opens 30 mins for it to vent. Guess where that heat/humidity goes - the room :(
Shower drainage is bad and if you have the wand attachment on full power you will be in a puddle within 20 seconds. If you just have the rain shower on it is fine.
Shower only had 1 hook. Ideally there would be one for towel, clean & dirty clothes. There is nowhere to hang clothes (if you left it on the floor it would get soaked due to floor design).
No water bottle filler anywhere (told to use room/kitchen sink)
Dryers in laundry room do not dry clothes even at less than 1/2 load on low temperature. Lint filter was clean, but I needed two cycles to dry my clothes. (€4 each).
On Wed night, party music can be heard on 2nd floor. I could still sleep however
Neutral: Faucets for washing hands/mirror is in main bedroom? Deep sinks at least. Good: Location (2 min walk from Venezia Mestra train station).
Mattress - No issues with the mattress like at other hostels where they are not supportive.
Food: Buffet continental breakfast 6:30-10:30 am daily - good bacon, undercooked/slimy scrambled eggs, ok sausage.
3 types of juice (pineapple & some other), nescafe coffee machines. Very limited Tea selection (earl gray & some lemon thing) Clean rooms - great work housekeeping!
Kitchen has two BIG refrigerators, 3? induction cooktops, dishwasher, 2? sinks Shower water flow & pressure: I was in two different rooms on the first & second floor - six mixed gender roons - & had the same experience in both.
Rain shower head has very weak flow (i.e water per second) & pressure (how hard does the water come out).
Wand shower attachment has very strong flow (4x the rain shower amount per second) & very strong pressure.
You can have both turned on at the same time, but the water flow of the wand attachment is so good (& the rain shower so bad) that the rain shower is kind of useless.
The wand shower attachment is the best flow rate I have experienced in Europe (over 6 hostels, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Sweden). Think of 3/4" plumbing flow (not typical 1/2"). Locker size & hasp size: (where locker shackle goes through - usually limiting factor on the size of padlock you can use)
Biggest locker I have had so far. A+
Locker pulls out from under bunk bed (better design than vertical lockers where you need to close your bag every time).
Fits OPEN checked bag. Hasp size was good enough for Abloy PL330 5/16" (8mm) thick shackle padlock. WC includes italian...
Read moreDorm Room Sex and LGBT ASSAULT - Nightmare Experience at Anda Hostel in Venice, Italy
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
My recent stay at Anda Hostel in Venice, Italy was an absolute disaster, and I cannot stress enough how strongly I advise against staying at this establishment. The series of horrifying events that unfolded during my stay has left me shaken and appalled by the lack of concern, professionalism, and safety measures exhibited by both the staff and management.
My nightmare began in the early hours of the morning when a group of rowdy individuals returned to the dormitory after partying at a club. To my dismay, two individuals decided to engage in sexual activities in the bunkbed adjacent to mine, causing my bed to shake uncontrollably. I was abruptly awoken from my slumber and, with my torch light on, I politely requested them to stop. Shockingly, instead of acknowledging my request, the male involved became violent and launched a brutal attack on me, even attempting to steal my cell phone.
In a state of panic and seeking safety, I tried to make my way to the reception to report the incident. However, before I could reach the door, the assailant violently slammed it shut, trapping me in a nightmarish predicament. Ignoring my pleas for help, the onlookers in the room stood idly by, refusing to intervene and protect my well-being.
Finally managing to free myself from the door's grip, I rushed to the reception seeking immediate assistance. However, to my utter dismay, the staff at Anda Hostel were completely untrained and ill-equipped to handle such a distressing situation. Their incompetence was evident as they hesitated to contact the police, leaving me in a vulnerable state.
After what felt like an eternity, the police were eventually called. Regrettably, their response was lackluster, displaying little concern for my safety or well-being. I was informed that without seeking medical attention, their ability to take action was severely limited. As a foreigner in a foreign country, the language barrier only compounded the distressing situation, and the lack of support from both the hostel and the authorities was deeply disheartening.
To add insult to injury, upon being escorted back to the room to gather my belongings, the staff had the audacity to offer me another room on the same floor as my attacker. Their complete disregard for my safety and well-being was unfathomable. It was evident that they had no understanding of the severity of the situation or any concern for the safety and comfort of their guests.
Furthermore, despite having video surveillance that undoubtedly captured the entire incident, the staff chose to take no action against the assailant. Allowing him to remain on the premises demonstrated a shocking disregard for guest safety and raised serious questions about the hostel's priorities.
In conclusion, my experience at Anda Hostel in Venice, Italy was a harrowing ordeal that I would not wish upon anyone. The lack of security measures, untrained staff, and dismissive attitude towards guest safety are inexcusable. I implore anyone considering staying at this hostel to reconsider and seek alternative accommodations where safety and guest welfare are taken seriously.
Additionally, I cannot help but feel that my obvious appearance as an older gay man may have played a significant role in the lack of assistance I received throughout this horrific ordeal. It is disheartening to think that if I were a woman or a young girl screaming for help after being attacked by a naked man, the situation would have been treated with a much greater sense of urgency and concern. The discrimination and prejudice I perceived during this distressing incident only added to the overall feeling of vulnerability and injustice. No individual should ever be subjected to such treatment based on their sexual orientation or...
Read moreI’m sure that there are people that will love this place, particularly people under the age of 25 or who act like it.||||Facilities: very clean in my experience, HOWEVER (big however) i got conjunctivitis from their bedding/pillow and will be spending my time in Verona finding a good pharmacist. This makes it kind of unforgivable.||||Room: i stayed in 9 room dorm. Locker was big (need to provide your own lock, thin lock available at desk for 6 euro). AC did not work. Wifi was good as far as I could tell. You have to make your own bed—no duvet cover, just two sheets and a comforter. No towel (rental for 5 euro).||||Checkin/out: easy, you get a card. You put the card in a bowl at the desk when you leave.||||Clientele: very very young. Most seemed to be 20 or younger. I even saw some incredibly drunk guests who looked more like 15. Parties go till 4. Guests sleep until noon. Conversations about culture, sightseeing, history (grown up things etc) are nonexistent or facile at best. This is not a worldly place. This is for teens who go to Venice to get drunk. Except for the 40 something french guy who came back wasted every night at 3, snored at pavarotti levels, and woke up at 8 to fart and sneeze very loudly with little self awareness until he feel back asleep at 10.||||Amenities: i didnt explore these much. There was a horrible 80s cover band playing in the lobby one night. The bar was packed with 18 year old kids with bussin haircuts and zero bar etiquette—i couldnt get a drink. I went out and bought a beer at the chinese grocer around the corner and came back to drink it outside. I spoke with some college age girls from europe and russia but they were college kids with very little interesting or knowledgeable to say. A younger me wouldve loved this interaction and they were nice but not something of substance.||||Location: Mestre isnt nice, but it has what you need and the train station is 2 minutes walk away.||||Conclusion: i came out of here with an eye infection and a total of 10 hours sleep over 2 nights. I wouldnt ever stay here again. Even with a private room, the place is a highschool drunken house party till 4 every night and the sound carries up—especially since our AC was out and the windows had to be left open. If you are an adult looking for a place to rest, you should think about booking...
