If you drive to the location do it at your own risk. It is impossible to find the place without calling the owner. The property is located downhill on unpaved slippery extremely narrow path. No lights no sign. Once you arrive, there is no way to get out without the owners guiding you on the narrow path. After dark you are a prisoner so if you did not eat dinner before you arrive in the evening or didn't bring any food with you, you are forced to have dinner at the location at exuberant price. Three cups of tea with a tiny slice of cake for each 4500Y. Dinner is what is available not what you would like to eat at 6700Y per person cooked by the owners with no clear culinary credentials. It is Airbnb not a restaurant
The rooms are clean but the shower and the bathrooms are shared between potentially 12 people. After the first person using the claustrophobic shower it doesn't get cleaned till next day.
the water in the shower was cold and it required the quest to ask the owner to turn on the hot water. If two people are taking the shower at the same time there is no hot water. It is a student dorm at $250 a night. The shared facilities are described in a very tricky way and I would never stay if I would know it is a place where 12 adults will be crammed into one shower and 2 bathrooms. Good luck to those who rely on this bizarre five-star ratings or maybe people have extremely low standards and a happy to relieve the...
Read moreWhere do I start? The building is a very recent designer house and each element makes you feel the attention to details and professionalism of the owner. They designed the house so it offers the very experience they wishes for their guests. Mind blown. Rooms are neat and clean, simple, just as it should be. The location... We came on foot from the station, and it took us quite a while, climbing the hill quite hard. At first, we were not convinced, then we saw the view, and mount Fuji from bedroom! It's far from the station, but they offer to pick you up at the station, so, the location is only and advantage.
Now... The food. My god, the food. It was the best Japanese traditional course I ate in years. I took my French family there, and that loved it all, but the food really blew their mind. And you would certainly not expect so many dishes of that quality (with fresh and carefully selected products) for the price charged. Incredible.
Finally, the staff. How kind! You're in Kamakura and you want a comfortable, quiet, at home experience? You MUST stay there.
Let's be clear. I also run a minpaku, I'm about to open more rooms and a small restaurant and I want my future guests to feel exactly what we felt during our stay. It'll inspire my own business design in the...
Read moreSakura Sakura gave our family some of our most authentically Japanese experiences of our recent trip. Some of the things we loved were the indoor slippers (with a small pair for my 2 year old daughter), lovely japanese hospitality, birdsong and bamboo all around the house, and incredible home cooked Japanese meals. We had both dinner and breakfast here and they were as good as anything we have eaten anywhere else in Japan. The 6 course dinner was a special highlight. The hosts are warm and extremely helpful, even picking us up from Kamakura station (15m drive away) as it was raining when we arrived. On our second day we even woke up to a crystal clear view of Mt Fuji out our window. The location of the guest house is a little out of the way which contributes to the peaceful, natural setting. We didn't hear any traffic or train noise for our entire stay. Taxis to and from may need a bit of time to figure out the route as the road is a little rocky but we caught several and they always made it fine in the end. Kamakura itself is a nice little tourist destination and worth a few days to explore something a bit different...
