kokonoe machiya — Hotel in Kyoto

Easily the BEST place I have stayed in during my trip to Japan. A BEAUTIFUL house with cosy rooms and the most Scrumptious blankets ever. A beautiful garden, a fantastic common area, a kitchen free to use, and easily the Loveliest hosts I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Toni was so incredibly kind to me, he made sure I knew how to use the code to enter the hotel, washed and returned my laundry, gave me a matcha KitKat while we were having a chat, played Wii Sports Resort with me, helped me get into my suitcase after it locked itself up, provided me with a fully comprehensive list of all the best attractions in Kyoto, accompanyed me to and from the nearby 7-11 TWICE because I couldn't figure out how to withdraw money from the ATM, and was just so friendly, approachable and helpful. I only met the other host Ikumi for a little bit, but she was also so wonderful and offered to help me out with the ATM situation. 100/10 I’ll definitely be staying...

If you are a solo traveler and are traveling to Kyoto, then this place is perfect for you. I traveled to Kyoto on my own and was blown away by this place. It is ran by Toni and his wife and they are amazing people. I feel that this place is the perfect little spot to meet other travelers while being in a nice peaceful neighborhood. The aesthetic of the place is very Japanese like which is a plus, it’s very clean, and very accommodative. Toni was practically my close friend during my stay, he and I had many conversations and he gave me great advice on where to travel around in Kyoto during my stay. This place is surprisingly my favorite hotel I stayed at during my vacation because of the interactions and just how it felt like my own home during the stay. Really beautiful guesthouse which has been tastefully renovated in keeping with a traditional Japanese townhouse. Everything is beautiful with a lot of attention to detail which makes the experience of staying here really lovely. The owner of the guesthouse is also so helpful and able to provide loads of info on the city. The only downside is perhaps the location which is quite far from everything, but if you don't mind getting the bus/walking then don't let that stop you! Would definitely recommend...
