Shōjukan — Hotel in Nakanojo

My partner and I really enjoyed our stay at Shojukan! It's an amazing onsen hotel built over a fresh-flowing hot spring. The rooms were airy and spacious, there were many onsens to choose from (both private and shared). The hotel is not new or modernised, but my partner and I enjoyed the history and tradition that the building was steeped in. As befitting an onsen hotel, the many onsen in the premises were varied, luxurious, and excellent. Most of all, the owner and the other staff were unfailingly friendly and hospitable.

For example, when we arrived, we had not yet eaten dinner but it was already dark outside. The owner personally called restaurants in the area to make reservations for us, and drove us to and back from the restaurant. They also took care of many little details that made our stay very comfortable. We were provided daily with a flask of hot water to make tea, and a flask of cold water.

「塩の湯」、「常盤の湯」の二つの自然湧出の源泉を持ち、シャワーのお湯も温泉という湯量を誇る宿で、何と言っても貸切風呂の多さがここの持ち味だと思います。||||宿の斜面側には「古式の湯」一之湯から三之湯があり、いずれも空いていれば何時でも内鍵を掛けて使えます。一之湯がコンクリ造の一昔前の造ですが湯は自然流下だそうで、二之湯は檜の四角い湯船、三之湯は檜の丸い湯船です。二之湯と三之湯にはシャワーがあり、体を洗うのに良さそうです。||||そこから少し奥にあるのが大浴場。と言っても四人ぐらい入ると湯船が一杯になってしまうくらいの大きさですが、貸切風呂がたくさんあるので、大浴場もほとんど貸切状態です。大浴場は２階になるのですが、その階下全部を使って混浴露天風呂（午後4時から6時まで女性専用時間帯）があります。ここの源泉が常盤の湯で、竹筒二本から源泉が打たせ湯のように注がれています（湯温は源泉60度なので打たせ湯ではありません！）。||||さらに宿から二、三分ほど坂を登った所に「山里の湯」があり、斜面沿いに上から四人用、二人用、三人用くらいの大きさの湯が、簡単な仕切りで区分けされています。フロントが利用調整をしており、一度に３組しか使えないので、先客がいると待つ必要があります（部屋で待っていれば、空いたら電話をもらえます）。||||このように、貸切風呂が六つもあるので、夫婦やカップルが心置きなく過ごせると思いますが、宿から渓谷が見えるわけでもなく、一番奥の建物からは路地しか見えず、さらには温泉街の中心部にも距離があり、立地としては残念な場所です。||||まあ、食事も月並みなマグロ刺身とかは出さない工夫がありますので、頑張ってはいると思いますが、釜飯の火を付け忘れ、他のお客に呼ばれたことのせいにする仲居さんの仕事振りに若干問題点を感じます。また、洗面所の天井とか、大浴場の脱衣所の天井とか、クモの巣が残っています。ソフト面での意識も改善して欲しいです。||||布団は、日頃シモンズのベッドを使っている私にも気にならない、良い具合の固さのあるマットレスを使っています。朝までよく眠れました。||||猫好きな方には、ねこ温泉として知られているようです。これがなければ星二...
