Better choices elsewhere.||Summary (cons):|1. Hotel has aircon/hygiene problems and rooms and lobby are smelly and dank.|2. Staff is poorly trained and inflexible in accommodating guest requests.|3. Food at the buffet breakfast is sub-par compared to other Japan hotels.|4. Food and service at the bar were sub-par, and bartender did not know how to make the drinks on the menu.|5. Staff was apologetic and polite but rigid and did nothing to correct situations.|6. Location is a bit removed from local attractions||On the plus side, |1. Lobby and rooms facing north have fantastic views |2. Subway and train very accessible|3. Local Kinetsu and MIO offer great shopping and food||Long story:|I am a Bonvoy Gold member -- only one step up from base, but entitled to room upgrades when available. I had booked 2 rooms for 5 nights for my wife and I and our 2 kids. One of our kids could not make it. ||When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by a strong sweet odor in the lobby. At check-in, the staff spent 30 minutes changing the reservation from 2 persons to one person, saying this was "required" and would save me money. The savings turned out to be about $10 total for the 5 nights we had booked. I would have gladly paid $10 not to stand around the lobby for 30 minutes. I was told no upgrades were available.||Unexpectedly the entire stay was charged up-front, though my reservation was 24 hour cancel-able. This made it awkward to leave, leaving us compelled to persevere.||Going to the rooms we found the rooms were musty and damp with a strong odor. We complained to the front desk and they sent us to new rooms. However they had sent a staff member to those other rooms ahead of us and the rooms smelled of disinfectant when we arrived. Both sets of rooms had some kind of air cleaning device in the rooms. Not wanting further delay our trip, we accepted the second set rooms. By the time we returned later that night the rooms had developed a musty odor and this permeated out clothing by the end of the stay.||This seems a ventilation and hygiene problem in the entire hotel.||Other experiences were sub-par as well. The staff is inflexible and, for example, would not allow me to take photographs of the view from the lobby area using a tripod, even after hours. I'm a photo enthusiast, and one of the attractions of the hotel is the view. It was nonsensical to prevent me from setting up a tripod out of sight at 10pm when there was literally no one around. I requested access to a meeting room in the floor above the lobby instead, and this was rebuffed too. ||Other hotels have always been very gracious and helpful allowing me get nice photos from conference rooms and unoccupied guest rooms after hours. For example, At the Caledonian (Hilton) in Edinburgh, a staff member escorted me to a suite on a high floor to allow me to take photographs of Edinburgh Castle. Similarly, in Tokyo, at a hotel I wasn't even staying at, the staff was happy to escort me to an empty room to take photos. I would think such photos online help sell the hotel.||The breakfast buffet was "discounted" to the same price as other hotels, but unlike the hotels we staid at elsewhere in Japan, the buffet included only white or wheat sliced breads whereas others had baguettes and rolls. Croissants were doled out grudgingly by a staff member with a cart, omelets had to be ordered on paper with a limited ingredient selection. The first day we ate at the buffet there was no butter available, it appeared upon request the second day.||The result was that while we ate at breakfast buffets the prior 9 days, we gave up on the Miyako after 2 tries and ate at a nearby starbucks, (don't recommend) and another local cafe in MIO (like). The buffet was nearly empty each day, so I'm guessing other guests felt the same.||An early dinner / snack at the empty bar required 10 minutes of standing around and assuring the manager that we would be gone within 2 hours. This turned out more difficult than anticipated after we ordered 2 soups, a salad, 2 burgers and 2 drinks. The soups took over an hour, the drinks took 20 minutes, and the one mixed drink was nearly undrinkable and occupied half the glass. ||Complaints to the staff resulted in profuse apologies, but no results or changes. Staff over-all was rigid and unaccommodating. For a so-called 5 star hotel the experience was...
Read moreI stayed at the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel from March 08 to March 14, 2025. Below are my views on good (+) and not-good (-) about this hotel.
Good things: I arrived late (around 4pm) and the check-in line was long. I told them that I am an ambassador and the person who guided me in said that everybody were in the same line. There was another person aside of the line asking people for name. I again told them that I am an ambassador member, this time the person took me to a separate table (the bell table in front) and called Yasunaka (not sure the spelling is entirely correct). This person checked me in and explained to me about the lounge, the gift, breakfast, etc… which was great. the gym on the 38th floor has wonderful view. They have the gym mirror (forget what it is called) that you can do exercise following the instruction in the mirror, which is quite nice. The club lounge is quite nice with various items for tea time and happy hours.
Not-good things: Yasunaka told me that my room was a corner room on the 49 floor, and I asked if there would be a suite upgrade. The person said that no, and I asked why (I already asked my ambassador to contact them a few days ahead of the time). Yasunaka didn’t speak much English and asked for help from Elsa. They talked to each other in Japanese and told me that there was no suite for the whole period. I said “that is fine. How about putting me on some suite in the middle of my stay”. Elsa translated and Yasunaka ran inside (talking to some manager, I assumed). Yasunaka came out and said that the was a junior suite, but it has double queen on the 41st floor (perhaps discouraging me from taking it). I said yes. The “interesting” thing is that many people wrote review about this hotel and said that they would say NO for anything. I talked to myself when booking it, they would do differently for ambassador member. Clearly they didn’t, their default response was NO (especially upgrade I guess). “Based upon availability”, as they always say, is most likely a lie or a refusion to do complementary upgrade even though there was at least one availability (and I am sure they gave me the worst). I am very disappointed about this. Even if you are ambassador member, please do not hope anything better. In terms of hospitality this hotel is a far from what I saw in the Westin Miyako Kyoto that I stayed one week before moving to Osaka. This hotel is too busy with outside guests and hotel guests. The staffs are not as polite as the one in the Westin either. When you stay at two different hotel right after another, you will see the different very clearly. For me, it was like going from level 10 down to level 1. This hotel is similar to many US hotels where you can only have breakfast in the lounge. But the restaurant (they gave me access for one day) is too busy and chaotic. The food is just ok, so you would not miss much having breakfast in the lounge. The gym is small and has very limited equipment. There is no pool of course (or at least I didn’t see it) The manager of the lounge, I forgot his name now, was kind of rude to me for the first few days. He greeted everyone else and took them to their seats and seemed to care about during their time. He didn’t do so to me and even confronted my wife in a unfriendly way. I asked for his name, and only then, the rest of the stay he treated us like the others. It was quite strange experience there. It would have been better if he treated every...
Read more😡😡😡No Netflix, No YouTube ? 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻Five years ago, whenever I traveled to Osaka, I would always choose this hotel and had stayed here many times. However, my most recent experience was extremely disappointing. I stayed from August 20, 2025, for four nights, paying an average of USD 600 per night per room. In the past, this hotel was my first choice in Osaka, but after this stay, I feel compelled to voice my dissatisfaction. This is supposed to be a five-star hotel, yet the service I received was far from five-star standard. Television in the room – The TV was not a smart TV. There was no Netflix, no YouTube. May I ask, what era are we living in now? I have stayed in three-star and four-star hotels before, and I have never encountered a hotel without a smart TV. This is simply unacceptable. When I asked the front desk staff, they even confirmed that there truly wasn’t one. That is simply ridiculous. Security – The hotel had no sense of security. When I returned to the lobby at night, I witnessed young troublemakers causing a scene, shouting and making noise in the lobby. It was obvious they were not hotel guests, and the lobby staff clearly noticed, yet they completely ignored it. How can you guarantee the safety of your guests under such circumstances? Guest quality and breakfast environment – The hotel was overcrowded with tourists, many of whom lacked basic manners. During breakfast, the restaurant was extremely noisy. Children were running around, chasing each other, and even playing with cutlery and food in public areas. Shockingly, no staff members stepped in to manage the situation. Taxi service upon departure – On the day I checked out, I asked the luggage staff to help arrange a taxi to the airport about 20 minutes later. The staff member simply told me to go to the ground floor and flag one on the street. This was incredibly unhelpful and unfriendly. I have stayed in many hotels, and your hotel does have a designated taxi pick-up and drop-off area. Why could your staff not assist me with this? I was left dragging multiple pieces of luggage by myself to the roadside to hail a taxi. If I thought that was acceptable, I would not have asked for their help in the first place. The staff showed absolutely no willingness to assist guests. Because of all these reasons, I will never stay at this hotel again when I visit Osaka in the future. There are many other hotel options in Osaka, and unfortunately, your hotel has regressed significantly — both in the quality of your guests and in the professionalism of...
