Golden Square, hostel — Hotel in Almaty

Overall a very solid experience. The location couldn’t be better and the staff were incredibly helpful and kind. Almaty’s layout can be confusing for a foreigner so trust me — this is good location. The A/C also worked well which was important. They also welcomed me to some shared dinners on their holiday. They had some rules around alcohol consumption that I didn’t love but the staff were flexible and allowed it as long as you are discrete. Really great hostel, very comfortable. Mostly long-stay Russians, with a few tourists. Not at all a backpacker vibe. Guests are very respectful and quiet. Strong hot water in the showers. Fully equipped kitchen but was always far too crowded to cook. Good wifi. Staff speak no English. Amazing location, right in the center, near to the metro and all bus routes. Not a backpacker hostel by any means. No real area or atmosphere for socialising. Kitchen facilities looked adequate. Toilets were stinky, showers are small with little privacy.

Bed cabin has privacy but too small for a tall person. 187cm had to lie diagonally and still touched both ends. AC unit was shockingly loud and not very cool. Noise from nearby road is noticeable.
