Hostel 888 — Hotel in Almaty

Clean room and linen. Awful stay.

It started with the male receptionist. After he got my passport to check me in, he said "Pay now. In cash." (Not that he was not able to speak English because when he took me to my room, he tried to sell laundry services with perfectly clear English sentences.) So I gave him my cash, and he grumbled about having to make change. My first day in Kazakhstan, and I'm supposed to carry exact change to make the hotel staff happy?! When I asked about drinking water, without a word, he pointed to the kitchen in the basement. There was only a faucet for tap water. The wifi only works if you sit downstairs near the receptionist desk. The men's bathroom has mold on the walls, and the shower's cradle appears to have been broken a long time ago and has never been replaced. So if you want to wash your hair, prepare to squat down. The only thing you expect from a hostel is to sleep. But there were noisy children outside the room, and then they came inside and made noise very late. Their mother is one of the owners, she didn’t take responsibility of them. They started playing videos very loudly from the phone, after 23:00 , and their mother wasn’t there . Also she turned of the fan and then it was so hot. It doesn’t make sense to sleep in the same room with children. Especially when their mother is not with them all the time.

I was very disappointed I couldn’t sleep well. Could be a good place without that woman...

정말 실망했습니다. 베드버그 나옴. 그런데 더 실망한 것은 그걸 내 탓을 하는 그녀의 태도.

나는 그 호스텔을 가기 전에 베드버그를 물리지 않았음. 호스텔 첫 날 물린 자국이 생겼고, 더 많이 물린 둘째날 후, 침대에서 기어다니는 베드버그를 발견했음. 호스텔도 베드버그를 없애야 할테니 나는 사체를 보여주며 바로 알렸음. 근데 나만 베드버그에 물렸고 다른 사람들은 물리지 않았다며, 전엔 이런 일이 없었다며, 내가 베드버그를 데려온 것처럼 돌려 얘기함.

읭? 했지만 고맙게도 그녀는 내 침대를 청소했고 나는 적절한 약품을 쓴 줄 알았음. 하지만 베드버그가 그날 밤 내 침대에서 또 나옴. 알고보니 베드버그 전용 약품이 아니었고, 뭔가를 섞어서 직접 만든 것이었음. (그게 뭐였는진 아직도 모름) 그리고 뭔가 이상해서 방을 둘러보니 카펫, 내 자리와 반대편인 커텐에서도 이미 죽은 베드버그를 발견함. (내가 대충 본 것만 총 4마리) 만약 내가 베드버그를 4마리 데려왔다면 난 이미 물렸을 것임. 하지만 난 거기 가기 전 물리지 않았음. 그녀는 내가 예약한 5일 중 남은 2일과 밖에서 잔 1일치를 환불해주며, 본인도 베드버그가 더 퍼지는 것을 원치 않으니 방의 모든 사람들을 내보내고 청소를 할 거라고 했음. 하지만 알고 보니 나가는 사람은 나 혼자였음. 그 방의 누구도 그런 얘기를 듣지 못함.

그것에 대해 컴플레인을 걸으니 갑자기 말을 바꿈. (누구는 1-2일만 남았도, 어떤 숙박객은 갈 곳이 없고 블라블라) 그러다가 갑자기 나보고 다른 방을 제공해주겠다고 함. (원랜 다른 방에 재우면 베드버그가 퍼질테니 원치 않는다고 했음 ㅋㅋ) 이 일에 대해 아무 것도 모르던 남자 직원과 한참 얘기를 했는데 내가 이 상황을 전부 다시 설명해야 했음.

쨌든 방을 비우고 청소를 안 했을 테니 베드버그는 번지고 있을 듯. 나는 청소를 했다 해도 비추.. 주인이 한 태도로 봤을 때 겉에만 확인했을 게 분명함. 그리고 적절한 약품도 없음. 베드버그는 철제 프레임보다 나무 프레임에 더 잘 서식하고, 어둡고 좁은 틈새에 잘 서식하는데, 프레임을 분해해서 샅샅이 뒤져본게 아니라 매트리스만 걷어내고 겉에서만 보고 호스텔 주인은 못 찾겠다고 함.
