To call this place a hostel does it is a great disservice. They exemplify what all hostels should aspire to be. Newly opened, the owner, Ep, truly cares about the well being and comfort of his guests. Incorporating his own personal quality for the finer things i.e. food, alcohol, drip coffee, etc. is something you should experience. His passions lie in the personal happiness of his guests and it shows as Ep, the barista John and the rest of the staff honestly care about you having a wonderful stay. This hostel goes well beyond the typical types of hostels travelers are accustomed to giving it a higher class feel more indicative of star rated hotels. The 1920s ascetic gives the hostel a more refined quality and the staff dresses according to the time frame. The quality of food and alcohol is outstanding; the olives and homemade cookies are a must! They also specialize in drip coffee, the only establishment in Vientiane to do so and they have truly perfected the art. There are quite a few places on the property to relax and chill without it being a party environment. The rooms are very spacious as are the bathrooms. There's always hot water in the showers and the internet works everywhere in the hostel. The way they do breakfast is interesting as well. It's self-serve so you'll have to cook your own eggs, noodles, toast, cereal, etc. (which are provided) just so long as you respectfully clean your dishes afterwards. The options for breakfast vary and are replenished continuously. Each pod has a private curtain, electrical outlet, private light along with a locker inside the pod itself. There is a $6 USD deposit for the dorm key and the towel, but will be returned when you leave. All rooms are air-conditioned. Cleanliness is one of their priorities and it shows as the place is always immaculate. The location is perfect too as it's in the center of everywhere you'd want to visit in Vientiane. It also sits right across from a night food market where they serve all types of cuisine, all at great prices. The hostel offers bus services, tours and will help you get anywhere you need to go. They offer other services as well like first aid, antibiotics, they sell cigarettes (if that's your thing) and they have free water stations located throughout the hostel. If you truly want a relaxing and more sophisticated experience then staying at Barn1920s Hostel is a must. Not only that, but for what you get for the price is...
Read moreThe venue is lovely - great kitchen, free drinking water, lounge area and nice patio. There are free bikes and the staff are friendly. I'm afraid though that a few things about the room meant 3 very poor nights of sleep. Firstly, my husband was put in a four bed room and I was put in a 14 bed room for the same amount of money - we both found this confusing, as throughout our travels a four bed room is more money. Looking at the very positive reviews, I wonder if I was unfortunate in being given the worst bed. It was a top bunk next to the door. Every time someone walked anywhere in the room, the person below me moved etc, my bed shook. It was significant enough to stop me sleeping and to wake me up continuously for 3 nights. Eventually we moved hostels, as we were staying for another 4 days in the city, because I couldn't handle the lack of sleep. The Wifi was also very poor. I usually leave very positive reviews - and can put up with a lot for a good nights sleep, but the opposite is also true - I wouldn't stay here again because despite the excellent amenities and location, the structure of the bed and room...
