At a nightly rate of 2000 SEK (175 EUR), Hotel Jūrmala Spa offers an experience that leaves room for improvement in several areas. Notably, the absence of a complimentary dental kit is disappointing given the price point. The provided single soap for both body and hair feels subpar for a spa hotel, highlighting a cost-cutting measure that undermines the luxury experience.
The spa, offering 2.5 hours of access, is positioned as the main attraction. However, as a four-star establishment, attention to minor details is crucial and often expected.
Breakfast: Served from 7:30 to 10:00 AM, breakfast was satisfactory but unremarkable. During our 9:00 AM visit, the juice was warm, and while the coffee machine was functional, the bread seemed stale. Despite the good quality of food and desserts, the high guest volume may challenge the hotel's ability to maintain consistent quality. A one-night stay might be sufficient as the breakfast experience could detract from a longer visit.
Rooms: Our standard double room was spacious and included two bottles of complimentary water, small lotion bottles, hair caps, a hair dryer, and a safe. The beds and pillows were firmer than preferred. Our 6th-floor view overlooked nearby buildings, with the hotel extending up to the 9th floor and featuring a rooftop bar on the 11th floor.
Spa: The spa offers a commendable variety of amenities, including a cold plunge, multiple saunas ranging from 50-150°C, two pools (one cooler and one at 28°C), bubble beds, and bubble pools. Facilities also include a salt sauna, steam sauna, and a poolside bar. A free towel is provided, but additional amenities are not included, which may be considered a drawback for some guests.
Conclusion: While Hotel Jūrmala Spa's proximity to the beach is advantageous, I would recommend staying in a four-star hotel in Riga, such as the AC Hotel by Marriott or Radisson Blu, and driving to Jūrmala for the beach experience. This alternative offers a more consistent luxury experience and better value for the price.
Positives: Spacious rooms with basic amenities. Variety of spa facilities. Close proximity to the beach.
Negatives: Insufficient toiletries for a high-priced, four-star hotel. Mediocre breakfast experience with issues like warm juice and stale bread. Firm beds and pillows might not suit all guests. Lack of complimentary items like a dental kit and separate body/hair products. Better value options available in Riga with similar or higher quality. The hotel has potential, but there are significant areas where it falls short of expectations for the price and...

Some of the things have remained the same, some are not. Something has happened to the attitude for customer service and satisfaction. One can not state that the service would have been unfriendly, but it was indifferent.
We arrived very early and asked if there would have have been any vacant rooms. The receptionist only replied that check-in is at 3 PM. We are well aware of that, but in all the hotels we have visited, they have even bothered to check the situation if there are vacant rooms. If not, we would have been quite satisfied with the situation.
The same change of attitude was in the restaurant. When we saId that bouillabaisse was just luke warm, the only comment was 'oh, sorry'. To be fair, the main cource was superb. The roast of the steak was perfect medium rare.
The hotel was apparently just renovated some time ago. All facilities are clean and modern. The overall look is comfortable.
The staff has embraced the idea of good customer service brilliantly. Everyone was very helpful and proficient in the language.
Rooms are spacious and bright. Plus a great view over Jurmala and even the sea.
The spa has been nicely refurbished. The pools are not quite suitable for miles of swimming, but they are large enough. The spa has several good saunas. The salt sauna in particular was a pleasant acquaintance. A little criticism of two things: In a Finnish sauna, you should definitely throw water on the stones. The purpose of the stones is part of Finnish sauna culture. And another thing; In many spas, young children need to wear diapers, for obvious reasons. We saw at least once a child urinating in a pool in a steam room.
The restaurant menu is varied. All portions looked really beautiful. In particular, the steak and bouillabaisse were almost perfect. The steak was a tasty in both medium and medium rare frying. The scallop was beautifully made, but the characteristic taste of the delicate ingredients had somewhat disappeared. The serving was well timed and the waiters were well acquainted with the composition of the portions.
Bicycle rental is a good service. There is a lot to see in the Jurmala area. Note, that here are not official bike paths everywhere and some of the sidewalks are in pretty...
Read moreOverall the stay was ok: the location is very good, at the very center of Jurmala, very proximate to the sea, with a beautiful view across the windows. The beds are ok and linen is clean. There were no major disappointments, but lack of attention to the customer was probably the decisive factor why my family would not be willing to return to this place. We liked the spa because it is child-friendly (no artificial timing restrictions for children), there are two pools with a different range of temperatures and rather good facilities. Apart from standard saunas and steamers in a rather small space they also offer a range of non-standard ones like a turkish bath (with a shallow pool in a steamer, which should be particularly attractive for families with small children, but is equally enjoyable for everyone). Our family appreciated a very simple apparently minor service which was truly satisfying - salt steamer and the fact that salt is there for any visitor to enjoy, it is not distributed only during a selected time, it is not restricted, so one can leave the spa with a perfectly exfoliated skin as a standard experience. However, abundance was not everywhere - water/tea is not offered in the spa for free, and the shower in the steamroom was already defective, and warning sigs everywhere (like the warning of being fined 50 euros for taking food away from the restraurant, or signs warning of 200 euros fine for smoking in the balcony. The spa does not have an equipment to dry the swimsuits, there is also no space in the room to hang them out for drying. The hotel lobby looks impressive, but the quality and comfort of the rooms is somewhat disappointing - low quality (and some pieces already broken) furniture, their lack of coziness, and lack of attention to the visitor's basic needs. E.g. if one would like to get a kettle in a standard room, it is necessary to ask, but even though we did, and it was provided, room service did not bring the cups or tea/coffee. In a superior room the kettle was already there, but the room service forgot to add the third cup for a person who was included in a reservation. Overall it was ok, but we have stayed in spas which offer coffee machines in the rooms, so the strange experience with the kettles at Jurmala spa hotel was...
