Review from a highly experienced travel blogger who specialises in budget travel. Trust me when I say, I'd sooner return to the African mud hut I stayed in than this hostel (the hut was much cleaner too)
Do some research and you'll notice the bad reviews on here are very specific, the good ones are very brief. So here is an honest in depth review of why you should NOT stay here. The quick summary is highly aggressive owner, skanky showers, unauthorised payments, no vibe, no staff available, musky toilets and filthy beds... more details below.
We arrived at 4pm and no one answered the door. There's a WhatsApp number but its no use if your phone is dead or you can't use your sim. Someone left so we managed to get in. No staff on hand. Just an envelope with cards in. Not a huge issue until we saw the state of the rooms. Absolutely disgusting smell, all beds were filthy even the "clean" ones. Toilets were too. We tried to speak to a staff member, but there was no one on hand. We eventually left and came back later. We politely spoke to the new girl about the issue who called the manager. Pete requested to speak with me on the phone and was incredibly aggressive and refused to accept our complaints. I pointed out the numerous issues. Suddenly he was at the check in desk. He'd been there all along but just decided not to respond apparently. Again with his standoff nature and sarcastic tone decided to dramatically "inspect" the room (honestly the guy could have won an oscar for his performance).
Obviously then refused to acknowledge the state of it. After the 10th time aggressively asking me "What's up man" not wanting to yet again explain the obvious, requested he cancel the booking immediately and waiver the fee for the room. He reluctantly agreed (still complaining) and said to email the hostel about cancelling for his records.
Interestingly, the very second we left the hostel, an unauthorised payment was taken out. Something a lot of other people have complained about.
Having stayed in over 200 hostels and never having an issue, I'm astounded by the level of unprofessional behaviour and aggression from the owner.
Looking forward to another one of Petes sarcastic responses to this review (we're currently in an email war as he has gone back on his word) He claims I never asked for the fee to be waivered (as if I would happily pay for something so decieving)
Looks like we won't be getting a refund but I hope this review can help a few people choose somewhere better to stay and not make the same mistake we did!
So for the 11th time Pete, that's...
Read moreI booked into this place, acting completely in good faith that it would be a great place to say. I have extensive experience staying in hostels all around the world and I've seen the best and the worst. I read the rules which said that they don't accept groups of males larger than five, and there was another rule about larger groups of any kind. It said they don't accept children, and don't accept stag/hens parties. Nowhere among those well-placed list of rules did it say you can't be over 39. Nothing lead me to believe that I was doing the wrong thing by booking a bed in this place.
It turns out that little piece of information was buried in "fine print". When I found out that I would not be allowed in the door, I sent a cancellation to booking.com. I don't know if something was lost in translation, but somehow I still ended up paying to stay in a hostel that I wasn't allowed to stay in. Given they state that the age limit is a strict rule, you'd think they'd mention their strict rule among all the other rules, not in the fine print. I was not aware of this rule until I'd already laid down my credit card details.
Notwithstanding, during the exchange of messages between myself and the hostel, the hostel's management acted as if they were the victims. Trust me when I say, I felt like I was talking to military officers, not hospitality industry staff.
Now, having read some of the negative reviews of this place, I think I might have dodged a bullet. I'm thankful I never ended up staying at this hostel and I will never forget what took place. It's something that's never happened to me anywhere else in the world.
The funny thing is, when I review places, I have a habit of focussing on the positive. It is so rare that I find myself feeling I have to say something negative. Today...
Read more(Date of stay: 4-8/08/2023) Fantastic little hostel located in the old town of Vilnius. The service was lovely, for the most part. Alice; This young Aussie chick who was working there at the time and who was cleaning my room, threw my water bottle away that was sitting on the shelf right above my bed while I was gone, just because it was empty 😒. When I returned as she was still cleaning, I couldn’t see it anywhere, so I asked her if she threw it away and she just casually said “yes” without a hint of thought about her actions or even an apology at the very least, even after I told her that I was still using it. But nonetheless, Indria (sorry I’m not sure how to spell your name) and Marta the other staff members were very sweet and kind, shoutout to you ladies. Free laundry operated by the staff is included and the common area, which is right in front of the reception, contains a bar and is small in size, which does a great job at bringing people close together; Creating a social atmosphere. The upstairs shower is a bit oddly designed though. The ceiling slopes right above your head and depending on how tall you are, it makes it a bit difficult to stand and hold the shower nozzle, as there is no holder for it. But it’s not that big of a deal. Vilnius is an absolutely amazing and beautiful city and I’ll definitely be back and would definitely stay at this...
