We never book a trip without first checking the reviews on Trip Advisor. So, every time we arrive at a hotel we expect it to be fairly decent.||||This hotel had some excellent reviews but did not live up to our expectations. I would love to write a positive review about this place but we were seriously disappointed in it.||||Of course there were some good things.||||On Christmas Eve the knock at our door was accompanied by a bottle of wine compliments of the house. The lobby was really nicely decorated for Christmas too. The hallways and doors to the rooms had Christmas decorations as well.||||Front desk service was nothing special but it wasn't bad either.||||The bathroom sink gave almost instant hot water. Nice.||||Our room also had very nice black wrought iron headboards and a nice sized framed mirror.||||Now, for the not so good.||||The room was old, sort of grungy. The floor of the shower stall looked awful. There were drops of paint in various spots on the floor in the room.||||There were very few plug ins – 1 in the bathroom, 1 in the closet??? and 1 in the room - and these were 2 pronged. I don't know when grounded plugs became common but it was decades ago. Many of our items would not be usable here.||||The TV was mounted on a metal shelf and when we put our laptop next to it to guage the size of the screen, it must have been about 12 inches, not exactly big screen, and the front desk advised there was no remote control unit for it.||||They had a restaurant but it was only open from 8 to 12 in the morning so I guess they figure their guests don't get hungry after the noon hour. You had to see this restaurant to believe it. The cooking staff would hand out plates at about ankle level to the serving staff at about nose level. There was a half floor separating the two rooms.||||Believe it or not, there was no door knob on either side of the door to the room.||You could twist the lock inside and the outside had a little handle to hold it so you could lock the room when you left. Obviously no “do not disturb sign” either.||||There was no phone in the room. And no heat or air conditioning.||||When my wife first sat on the toilet she banged her arm on the shower stall, and when it was my turn I did the same. They were almost touching. There was no toilet paper holder, you put it on the back of the tank or on the floor.||||The room had been designed for recessed lighting but now the covers were off and there were just bare bulbs hanging down. Different sizes too.||||The room had no dresser, no drawers and just one shelf in the closet and a rod. ||||There was one black chair like a cheap office chair. We love to play a game and it takes about 45 minutes, my butt ached every time because there was so little padding.||||We liked the bedding but the mattress was just resting on a discolored wood platform so it was quite hard and we both got back aches.||||There was virtually no place to use a computer, like a desk or table. ||||Our room looked out on some crumbling old buildings that were deserted and unoccupied. Further up the hill though was the beautiful view of the colorful cliff- side houses and a church dome and bell tower. The window looking out probably had not been washed in years.||||We were on the 4th floor which we thought was the top one, but there were 5 and above us people constantly clunked back and forth in high heel shoes, dragged furniture around and were very noisy. The rest of the hotel very noisy inside. On the fourth floor inside our room we could hear noise from the kitchen on the second floor.||||We expect some noise when we travel but usually outside from street activity not kids running up and down the hallways and people visiting loudly in the hallways. One night it finished after 2 a.m. and started up again at 7 a.m.||||Like other cities in Mexico there are often fireworks that sound like cannons and they go at odd hours day and night. If you are from a city that has drive by shootings be prepared to be ducking a lot.||||Maybe we just had the wrong room, or the wrong floor, or the wrong time of year, but honestly as much as I would like to write a good review we were hugely disappointed. Especially since we went from there to Leon for three nights and stayed in a magnificent hotel that was what we wish...
Read moreMansion del Cantodor is everything it had promised to be; clean, cheerful, and inexpensive. Also, as advertised, it’s 15 minutes from downtown and sits across the street from a little park. Complimentary breakfast is offered, along with the kindest staff on the planet, who bent over backwards to translate, and produce my partner’s request for coffee to go, with ‘liquid’ milk rather than powder. If I were looking for a cost effective hotel I would go back in an instant.||Now having said that, I’ d like to offer a piece of advice. If it is within your budget, splurge on somewhere special. Guanajuato is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited and it should be enjoyed to the fullest. In the daytime colourful houses and majestic buildings nestle together amongst the surrounding hills. The pretty cobblestone streets twist and curve, and in the evening whole town twinkles against a clear pink sky.||Still, if you’re determined to find good value, Mansion del Cantodor is a great option. The rooms are simple, but inviting, and the walk downtown is quick. But make sure to ask for a room with a large window, because some rooms only have a tiny one which looks into the hall, and in a town this lovely, it’s best to see as...
Read moreAn excellent choice, centrally located, at an economical price. You do not have to break the bank to stay in a hotel in the historical center of Guanajuato. This hotel is proof of that. comfortable, clean, safe with a friendly helpful staff. I have been to Guanajuato four times and have stayed here twice. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. Just walk out the door, turn left, take another left at the corner and follow the signs anywhere. You will be in the middle of the historical center of Guanajuato before you know it. I...
