Beach, palapas, 3 pools, clean rooms, bar and restaurant, kids play ground, very nice and relaxing, staff excellent this was last Visit January 2017. Current visit : developed into a convalescent home. Everything is quite nice, children can play or fall on all the wonderful cactus properly placed for their enjoyment. Don't forget about the beautifully garnished plates of bland or excessively animal fat laden education foods. NOT heart healthy or diabetic, but it is bland (especially for mexico). Definitely catering to the Latino population. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on grounds. However, sometimes they'll put some chairs out in the hot sun for folks staying here, so they can smoke. First day no second key, no big deal. No safe key (Big deal) , had to stay at the hotel till keys arrived (2 days). Currency exchange is 2-4 pesos less than standard, better exchange even next door at a restaurant. Staff seem more oppressed and afraid to talk than ever. Seems they want to be more accommodating to the old and infirm than to provide an atmosphere conducive to a"vacation " environment. Beware breaking rules however, it seems that the staff are more channeled to ensuring tenants follow the letter of the rules rather than the needs of the tennents. With over 30 years in the "Hotel/restaurant "industry, I would recommend further research into appropriate lodgings... I decided to give it another chance? All documentation is in Spanish except some of the menus. Housekeeping arrives at different times for the room. Children have a designated swimming pool yet they are allowed in the "Adult" pool (forcing most adults out). There is a 50'? TV in the bar but they don't turn it on. TV'S , in the rooms, have MANY channels including premium channels. However, there are only 8 English speaking channels; ESPN III,ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX NEWS, CNN, etc. All news channels, music channels are the only entertainment channels available. Prepare accordingly. Plumbing tends to be an ongoing issue, hot water, backed up toilet, the pipes speaking at random, etc. First couple of days may be ok, but after that it goes downhill. Oh yea, drinkers beware.... 6 ounce drinks run about $6 each and they put in half the amount of alcolhol standard in the US. Go next door? Last comment : last full day: air conditioning quit. Employee "fixed"... remote didn't work , air on constantly all night, opened door and window to balance temps... still excessively cold in Mexico. I hope this helps you decide where to go. Graded against other hotels...
Read moreBeautiful hotel on the beach, multiple pools, restaurant and easy to get to Zihua. Our room faced the beach, above the main pool, providing a wonderful view anytime of the day and night. The hotel was pretty full, but a quiet older crowd (+60) gave us a laid back stay. Bed was comfy, A/C and wifi worked well. Took a while for shower to get hot....but it did. The room could use a bar fridge, but since it did not have one, we made due with a cooler. The screen door for the patio was unhinged, so had to be careful with it. (Those were our only complaints). Very friendly staff, but english was spoken by only a few. Front office staff could def. learn some better english. I only say this because, the hotel caters predominantly to north american tourists. There are a few water coolers on the property, so drinkable water is free. Food in the restaurant was okay...good breakfast. Happy hour...2/1 mixed drinks...not so good. The restaurant staff were attentive and friendly. Pools are clean and well maintained with ample chairs and palomas. The loungers stay on the hotel property...not the beach, but ample trees provide lots of shade. The grounds are clean and welcoming, and staff were always quick to smile. The beach is fantastic and swimmable. There are restaurants at every hotel on La Ropa, so there is great dining...anytime. Taxi to Zihua is 60 pesos one way, 10 minutes to the center, or you can walk up a very big hill. There is a taxi hotspot less than a half block from the hotel. We would be happy to stay at The Mexicana...
Read moreWe found this online and hoped it was as good as the pictures, it is! We booked just a couple nights and thought we would look around the area to see what else was interesting in person. We do this commonly and move to the place that suits us best. Well we ended up staying our whole vacation here! And we did go and visit probably 10 other properties to confirm. There are other great options out there, but none that checked our boxes quite like Hotel Villa Mexicana! Their sister hotel, Irma was tempting, it has great views, but not on the beach. We had 2 rooms, first on the lower level, truly about 100 ft to the waves and right at the pool amazing. Then we went to the second floor, I personally like the views and a little more privacy on the 2nd floor. Rooms are on the small side, but super clean and housekeeping was excellent. I like to have a refrigerator and they don't have that in the room. We had a great shower and always hot water, took a little time for it to get hot, but always got hot. We had a car and parking was indeed free and right across the street. Staff as well as guests were all positive and helpful. Zihua has been one of our favorite places and this hotel as well. We travel quite a bit, so I think that says a lot. In our opinion Way better than the...
