The hotel is located on a fairly quiet residential street about a 10-minute (uphill) walk to Jardin Allende. The entrance to la casa is notable only for its dozen or so Chihuly-like colourful suspended lights, a lovely sight after dark. The large breakfast dining area up a few steps is simple, not particularly traditional or charming with its bright white chairs around glass tables. Despite this unimpressive beginning, we really liked our 2nd floor corner room named Shedron. It was mid afternoon when we arrived and the light that bathed the room was warm and attractive given the paprika-colored theme. The room was generously sized so I could perform my exercise routine (I didn’t ask if there was a gym….or a laundry room). There are 2 comfortable easy chairs, looking a bit faded given the amount of sunlight that strikes them in their window location. The splash of color on the bed throw had a few stains. Three 16-oz bottles of water are replenished every day. Although the sink was in the bedroom itself, it had lots of countertop space on each side plus an open shelf under the counter for extra storage. A magnifying mirror and hairdryer were affixed to one wall but was missing a towel bar on that side. A single towel bar was on the opposite wall. The king bed was very comfortable and we both liked the pillows. Nightstands with a lamp are on both sides of the bed. The toilet/shower room was unadorned but had towel hooks and a rack for 3 fresh stacked towels. The shower stall was large and the rainshower head had good water pressure. Water temperature fluctuated a little but was easy to adjust. Bath towels are a good size for us and did the trick even though they are not soft and fluffy. Tiny bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and lotion are the only amenities. No shower cap, no nail files, no washcloth.
Housekeeping began with a flourish but dwindled as our stay progressed. We left a daily tip of 50 pesos, the high end of the recommendation on a google search. Despite the English signage that recommended hanging a towel you will reuse, our towels were replaced every day (totally unnecessary, IMHO). The decorative pillows from the bed were never returned to the bed after the 2nd day, instead left stacked where we placed them on a bench every night. (I returned them to the bed in the afternoon, it looked so much nicer).
There are times when noise seems to echo throughout the building but we were never disturbed after 10pm except for the occasional barking dog in the neighbourhood. There is a rooftop terrace that would make a fine spot for an evening sundowner but I’m not even sure if they offer alcohol anywhere on the premises. There are rather pleasant views in all directions. I never saw anyone else up there and there were no chairs or tables visible.
The staff are all pleasant but most speak little or no English. It looked like the hotel caters to regional visitors as the breakfast menu is only in Spanish. We thought the breakfast (included in the price) was not a very good quality. The fruit plate was delivered immediately and clearly sliced some time before. The cooked offerings were pretty uninspired and the “specialties”, which cost an additional 50 pesos (about US$2.50), weren’t much better. The placemats and chair cushions are dirty/stained. Coffee is help yourself from a thermos and the pancake syrup didn’t taste of real maple syrup. We took our breakfast out half the time.
Overall, though, we had a comfortable stay and I might return here but there are some very beautiful “boutique” hotels that appear to be better options for a...
Read moreMy family & I have lived in Mexico for 9 months and take mini vacations throughout Mexico. Our stay at Don Quijote has been the WORST. When vacationing, the hotels we choose impact our entire vacation - so choose wisely! Unfortunately as soon as we walked in and met the staff, our hearts sank. We immediately knew we made a MISTAKE. ||||First, this hotel is far from Centro Historico - about a 12 min up-hill walk. The hotel is in a remote part of the city. and the walk back at night is uneasy and discomforting. ||||Second, the hotel is NOT pet-friendly. Mexico is one of the most pet-friendly countries in the world! We rescued a 3-month old mini Chihuahua last month that we carry in a sling carrier. He does not bark and is potty trained. Management fined us $800 Pesos for the one night we stayed there because of the dog. This is fraud.||||The room was underwhelming. For the price, you expect the room to have a mini-refrigerator. Nope! The food in SMA is delicious, so if you bring back leftovers, there is no refrigerator to store it. No ice-maker in the hotel either. When I asked for ice, maintenance served me ice in an old yogurt container he found in a bottom shelf at the bar. ||||The room was HOT since the AC did not work properly! It was a sweaty night. The TV did not work either. I wanted to watch the Canelo fight, but the channel had no sound! Maintenance told us to just deal with it. ||||I write this review to warn others not to stay here. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE WE DID. ...
Read moreI had a terrible experience in this hotel. For one it is very expensive, I paid $3,200 pesos (200 US dollars) for a very small room. The promise was that this was a 5 star hotel, that it provided guests with a tranquil, and a high end environment, and high quality meals. to my surprise, none of the above were true. Around 1 am some of the guests started a big, loud, very noisy party. Now, If people wanted loud, noisy parties, they would go someplace else, but not San Miguel de Allende. I and other guests reported the loud party to the office and to security--we've got zero help! the party ended at 5:12 am. In the morning, I and other guests attempted to speak to the clerks in office, but they were not only rude, but confrontational. " it's not our problem that you were not able to sleep because of the party," they stated. In this hotel, big-loud parties are not permitted, per the hotel's own policies. God knows what happened here. I don't recommend this hotel at all. My opinion about San Miguel de Allende has been changed since after this incident. No one helped. No one cared about me...
