I've been to YHA three times in the last month. --Rooms-- First time - 6 beds dorm (2nd floor) - Windows facing internal area of the building. It can gets a little bit warmer, but the room has a good space, mirror, lockers, desk with a chair and power points to serve everyone.
Second time - 4 beds dorm ensuite (3rd floor) - Great room! Now, windows facing the street which can get much more air circulation. It's basically the same size of the 6 beds dorm but with 4 beds only which provides you a more space to put your stuff. Clean bathroom as well. Nothing to complain.
Third time - 6 beds dorm (6th floor) - Room a little bit smaller than the previous one with windows facing the internal area of the building. No air circulation at all. It was really warm inside. Fortunately, someone had noticed and put a fan on the top of the locker. I think people that were staying nights before didnt open much the windows/doors so I don't feel I can blame the hostel for that issue.
-- Bathrooms -- Bathrooms were always clean during all of my staying. Hair dryer in all bathrooms in all floors and the showers got a good pressure as well.
-- Kitchen -- 2 kitchens! A big one with gas oven, lot of cutlery and sharp knifes. Great area to cook and have food without waiting for someone else to finish.
General impression: Best hostel in town. Clean rooms and bathrooms, nice staff, great kitchen, nice wifi signal and range. Basically it's how a hostel should be. I did and I will definitely recommend it/stay again.
(It might be "too much" if you're on a budget/backpacking. I just needed a good option in town to stay before getting my...
Read moreHaka House Wellington is a great location, and our twin room with an ensuite offered a good amount of space.
However, the advertised amenities like a hairdryer and kettle were missing, which was a disappointment, especially since the receptionist mentioned it had been like that for weeks. "Sorry" doesn't cut it, it's misleading.
The hair drier on the 5th floor wasn't working. Disappointing.
The room itself felt a bit bare-bones. Two coat hangers were hardly enough for two people, and the lack of drawers or a cupboard made it difficult to unpack. A small detail, but having the bath soap located outside the shower was inconvenient.
The hostel's wifi was easy to connect to and worked well with mobile phones. Unfortunately, it wasn't compatible with my Mac laptop (security related), forcing me to tether with phone.
It's important to note that the hostel can get noisy on Thursdays through Saturdays due to young guests partying. While I was able to sleep through it, those with lighter sleep might want to consider this. Additionally, the walls seemed thin, allowing some noise from neighbouring rooms. You will hear a lot of road noise during the day.
The advertised "harbour view" came with a bit of a surprise - a prominent view of the New World loading dock and its wheelie bins. While the harbour was still visible, it wasn't quite the picturesque scene I was expecting.
Comes back to the old adage: You get what...
Read moreHaka house is such a great option for accommodation. Price is affordable. Many facilities in the place. Comfortable beds. We stayed at the Haka house Rotorua too and both places were great. The Wellington room we got was way more spacious though even though both were twin rooms. The night manager lady was very helpful. We arrived around 9:30pm which was later than we hoped and after staff hours. We didn’t receive an email with instructions how to get in after hours because we didn’t change our check in time too later as we didn’t expect to get there that late but once we arrived we rang her as her number was on the door and she told us where the room key should be kept but we told her it wasn’t there and she said she’d come down and get it sorted for us. Which was very nice and helpful. She saw the issue on the system and fixed it and got us checked in. Which was a big relief for us. Location was great. Super market next door, lots of food options around and walking distance to the TBC arena which we had a concert to go to. Cant fault it. The fifth floor view was stunning. And nice to have a lift because on our trip so far many places didn’t have lifts or they were broken...
