Matamata Backpackers Hostel — Hotel in North Island

Without a doubt this is my favourite hostel I've been to! It has a lovely cozy atmosphere, a lounge with a wood burning fire place and it's lovely to sit there next to the fire and give the cat and dog some attention while reading my book! (Reminds me of home)Kitchen it great with an abundance of herbs and spices to choose from and also has an outside cooker for the sunny days and also a BBQ area.Games room, an AstroTurf area (great for exercise), a large seating area and the rooms are lovely "cabin like" rooms. Lovely quiet little place and on my way back to Auckland I'll be stopping in here again!And to top it off Lauren the owner is a brilliant host. Feels more like a home stay!Highly...

I've been in New Zealand for almost a year now, and I've stayed in a lot of hostels!! I can easily say that this was one of the best hostels I've stayed at since I've been here.

The owner is brilliant and obviously cares a lot about making the hostel the best it can be, both in terms of habitability and customer experience. The WiFi is fast and free, there are two cozy lounge areas, one of which has a pool table, the beds are well built so you don't feel your bunk mate moving around (if you're in a shared room) and the people are great!

Thoroughly recommend if you're travelling...

Super convenient location. Plenty of parking and also very close to the isite where the bus drops off and where the Hobbiton tour leaves from. Great common spaces for hanging out and a well equipped kitchen. Super clean and nice staff. I stayed in a private room, which was lovely. The only suggestion I could give was to add a fan. There was a bit of a heat wave while I visited and the wind direction wasn't to my benefit to catch a breeze. But, overall definitely would recommend if your passing...
