Motel Villa del Rio — Hotel in North Island

Green pool, severely leaking fridge, curdled milk, everythings broken, no towels - & hostile management.

The hospital put my mother up in this motel for a post-surgery stay, I hired the room next door to be her carer. Various things were broken and run down in both rooms; ie. the fans broke mid-use, the fabric dining chairs were broken. But the worst was the kitchen floor and carpet in my mothers room being absolutely soaked from the fridge leaking, causing a major slipping hazard. We could not clean this as no towels had been provided in her room. We notified management politely and management did come up to mop the large puddle once made aware of the leak, but did not apologise and still forgot to leave towels. Later we discovered her milk had curdled in the fridge, understandably at this point yes we complained. They only shrugged their shoulders and told us a previous tenant must have muddled with the thermostat. When we mentioned room checks being their responsibility (when we arrived our rooms were not locked, so presume the rooms had not been checked over after the cleaners left) this is when management became hostile... said they would refund us and we could go somewhere else if we were not happy! Don't take our continuing to stay as accepting the conditions. We were not happy at all - but at 7:30pm, 5 hours away from home, with a post surgery check the next day, all on waitangi weekend - unfortunately - we had no other choice but to continue on with our subpar stay. We truly weren't expecting 5 star. The wear and tear could have been overlooked for the price. But it is the managment being dismissive of their failures to provide the basics and safety to their customers that earned the review. The pool was green and closed, yet no discount on the room was given despite not providing the amenities advertised. The rooms were clean, but very VERY run down. The kitchen floor and carpet in my mothers room was soaked from the fridge leaking, causing a slipping hazard. Management did not provide her towels despite me specifically asking if there were towels in her room at check in, so we could not clean this up ourselves. The blades on the fan they provide broke off 2mins after being turned on rendering it useless. The beds were OK but the rooms are uncomfortably hot! WORST MOTEL EXPERIENCE IN NZ

I honestly don’t even know where to begin — everything about this place was disappointing.

To start with, they don’t answer the phone, even during working hours. That’s literally the bare minimum you expect from any motel.

I stayed here during winter, and the heater in the room barely worked. The bathroom window was broken, which made things even worse — it was freezing, and there were flies and mosquitoes inside. The bathroom was so cold it was almost unusable.

The water heater (geyser) worked on the first day but stopped working the next morning, so I couldn’t even take a shower.

I’ve stayed in many motels across New Zealand within the same price range and even cheaper ones, none of them were as bad as this. Absolutely...
