West End Schnapper Bar — Restaurant in Northland

There's nothing like fresh snapper and chips! It's a Kiwi icon and tradition. And nobody cooks it to perfection like West End Schnapper Bar!

Fish and chips is a beloved staple of New Zealand culture and was a cherished family tradition especially on Friday nights for Catholics. I have fond memories of coming to West End Schnapper Bar as a child c1960 so it's had the same name and location for awhile.

They will gladly cook it to your liking no problem at all and to be honest it's the best I've had. The batter is always light and crispy and all the juices are perfectly sealed in, making it moist on the inside and golden on the outside.

I love the punnets of fresh mussels, kina and raw fish. It's always super fresh and delicious and also you can conveniently get your kai moana on the weekends!

This was the first time I had ever been to this place. I usually go to Great Wall Takeaways in Kensington, but I was over this side of town so thought I'd give it a try. First thing I noticed was there were no cars outside when I pulled up and no customers in the shop. This was on a Thursday night around 7pm. To me that was a bad sign straight away. Order of two snapper, two hot dogs and six dollars chips was very fast and the service was good. And so it should when they aren't busy. Amount of chips was okay and tasted good. Hot dogs were also okay. But it was this fish which was the let down. Two very small pieces of snapper for 7.50 each. It was an okay feed but...

Today date Thursday 30/10/2025. Ordered 2 Snapper $18. Min Chips $3 and 2 hot dogs $8. Cost $29 round off with more chips total cost $30. The fish cooked how I liked under-done and the chips were perfectly cooked but the hot dog was abit doughy. Lovely kai! Will i back? Yes! Noticed a handy dairy next door for tartare sauce.
