Happy Camper was my favorite hostel in the Philippines. The owner and his family are so incredibly kind. Any time someone was sick they checked in on them many times through the day to see if they needed anything. They helped set up reasonably priced tours, scooter rental, and rides to the airport. The owner cares deeply about his business, his family, and the individuals that stay at Happy Camper. The rooms and showers are clean and sheets changed daily. WiFi is spotty, but that is the case everywhere on the island. Great location, walking distance to everything but tucked away enough that it is not so loud from the village noise. Highly recommend this hostel.
Also, I see there are many comments on the dog at this hostel. She is very sweet, but very sick. On the island you will see a lot of sick dogs, many far worse off. The owner cooks her food (chicken and rice) to help her as she won’t eat most foods anymore. Sadly she is sick and there is not a bet on the island so he does everything he can, it’s clear he loves and cares for her. She is in a cage to keep her from getting out of the yard and going in the streets and catching more diseases from other dogs in her weak state. He gives her a bath every week and cleans her cage. I work with animals and he truly is doing the most he can, more than most dog owners do on the island. He could use the space and money he spends on her for his business, but he chooses to try and get her healthy. Give her attention when you can or ask her to take her on a walk if she is healthy enough. But please show some compassion for John (the owner) as it is undoubtedly hard for him to see his beloved...
Read moreWe stayed at this hostel for four days, and this experience will be a cherished memory for the rest of our lives. The clean bedding, fresh towels, perfect location, super cool A/C, and comfortable shower room were all just amazing.
And most importantly, our dear Gab helped us book tours, motorbikes, and ferries at cheaper prices than we found online. This experience will always hold a special place in my heart.
Gab is the best person I’ve met during my two years of traveling the world. She is, quite literally, an angel. I feel so lucky to have met a lifelong friend. Although I had to leave for my next destination, I will definitely come back here again in six months.
Gab is truly a beautiful soul — and an animal rescuer. Her spirit of service and selflessness is something the whole world should know about. I’ve learned so much just by watching her. I’ll do my best so that the “me” in five years can live like Gab.
Gab, I can’t wait to see you again. Until then, please stay healthy and happy🩷 I send u big hugs and lots of love 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

Read moreThanks so much to John and staff for a wonderful stay. Place is close to the ferry (only pay ~50 pesos for a tricycle ride to the hostel) and an easy walk into town for places to eat. There are also a couple of small stores close by where you can buy some things to make your own breakfast.||The hostel has an outdoor kitchen so you can cook, make your own tea and coffee, and plain sweet rolls are provided at breakfast.||The place is very clean, and it's so nice to have a single bed rather than a bunk bed. |The layout really encourages you to get to know your dorm mates which is great too.||We booked all our day trips from the hostel with the company they use (the reef and wrecks tour and the island escapade tour are must dos!). ||It's also only about 10mins to the start of the walk up the mountain (go for sunset, it's beautiful! 721 steps up but not hard, just take your time, view is worth it)||There's not much else to do in town and there isn't a beach so make sure you go on the island hopping tours, and go diving if you can!||Thanks for...
