Starlight was recommended to me by my dive shop. It did not let me down. Starlight is centrally located, a super short walk to the beach (where most dive shops are located), right across from the main open market on Malapascua (where one can buy fresh fruits), and nearby to great restaurants (including - crucially - 3 minutes from Malapascua’s best restaurant imho, Bakhwa Kiwi). ||The rooms are great. One thing I really appreciated was that they had been effectively critter proofed - nothing was getting in once the door was shut. Having moved around the tropics and remote islands a bit, I think this is no small feat. Overall, my room was very comfortable and I looked forward to coming back to it after a long day of diving. ||Sandy, the owner and manager was there and I had the pleasure of getting to know her. She cares a lot about starlight. She was kind enough to help me book my airport transfer on the way up. And - because we were going in the same direction around the same time on the way south to cebu - we shared the ride back. Obviously this isn’t an experience many other guests will be able to share. But it says a lot about how much Sandy cares about her guests and how hard she works on their behalf. She was always on hand to answer guests’ questions and help them out with whatever help or local advice they needed - or...
Read moreGreat value and worth the price for us as a backpackers couple.
Definitely highly recommend it and we would return.
We initially planned to stay for just one night, but ended up extending our stay to almost a week. The room is a good size for a couple, and the view from the balcony is especially beautiful in the mornings. It is the perfect really quiet place to rest after a day diving. Rooms are cleaned upon request, free of charge and staff is friendly and nice.
The room includes a kettle, cups, and coat hangers in both the bathroom and on the balcony. While the water pressure wasn’t great, it was still fine for a refreshing shower. You can even get warm water if needed.
The front rooms have older air conditioners that work perfectly, though they do make a bit of noise.
The location is excellent—just a 5-minute walk to the beach and close to the mercado. (Though if you're in a front room, the karaoke from the market can be a bit noisy specially on weekends.) There's also an amazing restaurant nearby, Guanna's Place, where we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.
The Wi-Fi wasn’t very reliable, so I used my mobile data when I needed. Also, the tap water is salty, but they offer free fresh drinking water, which is super important...
Read moreThe resort offers comfortable but small rooms back off the beach and right adjacent to the market where there are some decent meals to be had. There are a range of room options, including the queen bed option I had. This has a shower and reasonable sized bathroom, and a balcony. I had chosen the breakfast included option and this was fine. They even managed to cook it the morning after the typhoon. How ever, that was about all they managed after that even, despite their being little actual damage to the resort. Power had gone and rather than provide candles, nothing was given to allow us to see in rooms after dark. Neither were there any instructions given about what might need to be done during the storm. People moved in and left almost immediately because of the lack of action. The owner did refund 70% of the room rate for the storm-affected nights but it could so easily have been avoided with more thought. When one considers there were places better set up to cope for a fraction more, it made this resort one of the less attractive options. Solar panels had been installed by the time I left but were not working so it...
