Great hospitality from the moment they greeted us from our taxi to saying goodbye at the end of our stay. Reception is in the old town hall and has a bar area good for waiting for taxis or just watching the world go by. Our room was on the first floor of the old fish market next door. Bright, airy, spacious and exceptionally well fitted out. Our small balcony looked out over the bay, perfect. The sliding doors out to the balcony did a fine job of keeping out any noise. Breakfast was a real highlight, with a great range of pastries, fruit, cold cuts, cooked items, cereals, juices and even sparkling wine. The coffee (especially the espresso) were typically Portuguese, guaranteed to get you wide awake. We never found time to eat lunch or dinner in the restaurant, next time maybe. Adjacent to the restaurant is a sauna, shower and heated(ish, 21°) infinity pool with the same amazing views as the restaurant over the bay. At the very end of the terrace you can see the sunset over the other side of the harbour. The hotel runs an employee of the month competition and asks each guest to cast their vote, a task made difficult by everyone of them being friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Need tickets, a taxi, a recommendation? Just ask and it will be done in a jiffy. A very special...
Read moreNew hotel nicely located in the bay of the fishing town.
Room with view of the bay was nice except the bathroom door which was very open and did not block noises of your significant other doing their thing, if you are sensitive about that...
Staff and service were amazing and helpful.
Breakfast was ok and sufficiently diverse for a week stay although the scrambled eggs could need more seasoning. Drinks at the lounge bar were nice and the bartender Nuno showed us how to make the local poncha cocktail!
Unfortunately the dinner at the hotel restaurant only really offers proper meat based menus and just the common boring vegetable pasta dish for vegetarians. More diversity would be appreciated here.
Parking is not possible directly at the hotel. There is a public parking lot 2 minutes away but that costs 10 euro per day when asking the reception staff.
Location is otherwise nice and not too touristy, many locals are are enjoying their evening.
The hotel offers a very small fitness room, pool and sauna. We only tried the pool which was nice for a quick cool down.
Overall we had a nice stay and can recommend this hotel for a week stay as a couple ( if you don't mind the...
Read moreThe Churchill is a small friendly hotel with the most amazing views over the bay you can’t help but just stand looking out from your terrace in awe. Waking up to the waves each morning was beautiful. Breakfast was on the top floor with views of the bay and town. There was a good selection to choose from to set you up for the day. We had dinner at the hotel a few nights too it was great to have a couple of quiet nights after busy days touring. The room was nice and I had great relaxing sleeps, the sound of waves was so soothing. The was staff were amazing especially Daniel, nothing was too much trouble. It was my birthday while I was there and it was such a surprise to return after a day out to a little bottle of bubbly and message it really just made my day. We left an item behind us after our holiday and Daniel helped up so much to get it returned to us. Madeira is beautiful and Camara de Lobos a great base as buses run regularly from the high street into Funchal. However staying local is still good too, the poncha bar is a must! I cannot wait to return and I know there will be great welcome from all the Team thank you all for making our first trip to...
