I wish I could give a better review of this hotel because the view from all the rooms is fabulous and it’s very clean. However, the staff and the way the hotel is managed left a lot to be desired. My husband and I stayed at Hotel do Campo with another couple for three nights. Here are the problems we encountered: The hot tub was BARELY lukewarm; The outside pool did not look clean; When outside at the pool/hot tub, multiple doors were locked (why?), and it was really hard to find the one door through which you could get back in (through the dining room!) While in the indoor pool, I personally opened the door for three sets of people who were starting to panic about how to get back inside; The indoor pool area was not warm enough, and, while heated, the indoor pool was tepid the first day and really pretty cold the second day so we did not get in; The evening buffet, expensive at 21 Euros, was completely devoid of flavor and not warm at all. At first I was pleased to see all the veggie options, but everything I tried tasted like nothing (roasted (?) eggplant, Brussels sprouts, spaghetti with garlic, vegetable curry); the Brussels sprouts were especially awful, they were completely mush; The restaurant refused to give us tap water and said we couldn’t bring our own reusable bottle; note that we never use bottled water because of the waste, not the cost; The buffet closed at 2130 but they stopped refilling the buffet at 2045; They did refill the tasteless vegetable curry by taking the scraps and leftover sauce still in the chafing dish and throwing some tomatoes in and stirring it around; No veggie burger or any veggie selection on the snack bar menu; Drinks, (not even water - see above) were not included in the 21 Euro buffet; At breakfast, one coffee machine was broken and there was a very long line for the one that was functioning; the staff was continually distracted responding to the loud buzzing to refill the operational one; Fruit at breakfast was mushy and way over-ripe, inedible; Only cash was accepted for the spa’s massage services; There was no “do not disturb” sign so the housekeeping entered our room. We had left our own card in the electricity slot but had turned everything off in the room except two devices that we needed to charge up. The housekeeper pulled the card out so our devices were not charged when we got back. AND she closed the window which we had purposely left on the vent opening because the room was very stuffy; When we checked out, they charged us for six buffets. We didn’t realize until afterwards because no itemized receipt was provided at checkout. As of this morning, they had not responded to our email about it. Bottom line, if you only want a clean room with a view, Hotel Do Campo is fine. If you plan to use any amenities,...
Read moreLocation is fine, its quiet on the hill, overlooking the ocean. Would be nice to mention that the main road to the city is closed so you need to go around which is about half and hour walking. Or I would expect to find this information at least on the reception.
The room: oh boy...., this was not a 4 star hotel room, nowhere close. It needed badly reconstruction. We were given room for people on the wheelchair. (weird for us but ok, no problem) The furniture was looking rough and with old stains on the walls, bed and sofa. A/C was not working.... shower needed replacement. There was just no way to get water not scolding or cold :)
The bed mattresses was atrocious. This is obviously the reason why we had like 4 layers of sheets and cover on them when we arrived. The pillow also saw a better days. Dunno if it's the same in every room but it was rough sleeping in that room. Generally cleanliness was ok, we got clean sheets and towels, but that was about it.
The food was ok. I liked dinners, good fish, local foods, every night different thing to eat.... but there is always the same thing for breakfast, which u will get sick of after a week. Some difference with hams, cheese, edible sausage or even change a bread for a once.
Next, for the love of god, stop using the pen and paper system to order drinks during the evening. You have fully booked hotel and 2 servers for the dinner. Few evening you can't even order since they are understaffed + server also was as bartender and cleaning tables.
Hotel has a pool and outside Whirlpool - they were best thing in the hotel by far. The Game room is nice touch but you need to upgrade it from the y. 2000.
It was nice that receptionist were speaking French and German, but if you wanna speak english, well tough luck, better hope someone else comes to the hotel on the night shift.
Enormous amount of wasted potential. Either by lack of foresight or just owners don't wanna invest...
Read moreWell we where there over Easter for 7 nights. Stayed there over my 40th birthday. Luckily we did only book room and breakfast, as we cant recommend the dinner/food. Price is 21 Euros for the Buffet, and that is way too much for what you get. The buffet we tried once and we also ordered a salad the first night: eat somewhere else. Breakfast i think is good, wished there would be more nice fruits from Madeira to try, but all in all breakfast is good. Staff is very friendly in the restaurant and does its best. Not the best atmosphere in the restaurant, we tryed to eat outside, next to the pool mostly, though with the wind and rain, not always possible. The Hotel itself, is run by a family, and its just very basic, cant feel passion for the hospitality industry or tourism. Rooms arent clean, furniture very smelly. Windows broken, and with that much wind as we had, need fixing, as it was cold and loud, with the windblowing in. We explained this on our second day, and they said it was because we didnt shut the windows right. Well they had a handyman come and look at it at 8pm on our last evening. We left the next morning at 7am. Not really friendly at the reception, and we as guests didnt feel welcome. And bring your own hairdryer... There would be so little small things that wouldt cost much, to change this hotel in to a good rated stay. Because the views and location are lovely. The garden around it is lovely. But just more warmth towards the guests and makeing them priority and welcomed would help. Its has lovely views from the balconies and from the pool area, shame you cant see the view from...
