We arrived late on Monday 15th September around 10:30pm. We were greeted by 2 reception staff who were fairly friendly and helpful. I paid for the upgrade of room to superior 1 bedroom apartment for the air conditioning. They gave us a map on how to find our room and we were then left to navigate.|Our Room - |Got to our room and first impression late at night was that it was a lovely size room with a huge terrace. |On closer inspection it was far from ideal. |There was no water in the fridge and no where open at that time of night either, thankfully I purchased a bottle of water on the plane before landing so had some water for tablets etc especially as it was very warm and humid.|The light in the bathroom did not work, there were no bedside cabinets/drawers, the safe was left open but in the lock position so couldn't reset it, there were only 3 coat hangers in the wardrobe, the wardrobe space was very poor (we were there for 12 nights self catering), there were no shelves, no drawers in the bedroom so we had to leave most of our clothes in our suitcases, there was no tea towel in the kitchen.|In the morning I went to reception to complain and was greeted by Sari who was friendly and helpful.|She explained that the company had taken out the bedside cabinets and drawers in the bedroom and restricted the use of the wardrobe ???|The light in the bathroom was fixed that morning and also the safe was reset. I had to ask the maid for a tea towel however.|On closer inspection of the kitchen utensils we noticed that there were no saucepans, only 1 frying pan and 2 large casserole style pots. Boiling eggs had to take place in the kettle.|We had a major issue with the shower in that the water would not empty down the plug hole and would spill over the tray onto the bathroom floor, we complained tice about this but nothing ever was done. The toilet didn't flush properly and also kept constantly filling.|One night we came back from being out for food and someone had been into our room. The gate was left open, once inside all the lights were on, the TV was on and had also been moved along with the TV remote on the coffee table and other items. We complained to reception and we just had a shrug of shoulders.|Around the pool - |First few days around the pool were lovely, nice big area with plenty of sunbeds and parasols. Lovely 360 view around the area.|Main pool could do with a little money being spent on it, its dated but the area was spotlessly clean. The lifeguard was friendly and also the animation team. Unfortunately things got worse towards the weekend. There was a large family from Scotland (45 people) who turned up for a 70th birthday. They immediately complained that the bar was not open until 10:30 (they were all inclusive), so went to the supermarket and purchased 40 cans of stella, which were quickly drunk and then the empty cans were just discarded everywhere, the lifeguard cleaned the area.|The drinking continued throughout the day from 10:30 when the bar finally opened and the plastic drinking cups were just left on the floor to blow around that area and into the pool.|We like to have a good time on hols but this was beyond. Once again the nice friendly lifeguard was constantly cleaning up after them, this went on for several days.|Had a chat to a lovely lady who was also staying there self catering like us and had been going there for years. She explained how the complex was lovely when it was just offering self catering, B&B and half board and that things went down hill when it then offered all inclusive.|The rowdiness got even worse around the pool towards the end of our holiday when we had an influx of Irish arrive and on their first day was fighting around the pool.|On our final day we were getting picked up at 6:00pm, so enquired if we could keep our room to shower etc as it was a long day. Unfortunately because they were fully booked this was not possible even though Sari at reception tried her best. We packed that morning and checked out of our room at 10:00. We had a day by the pool but due to the rowdiness and fighting we we couldn't wait to get home and have never felt like that in Gran Canaria. Went down to the toilets to have a shower. There were 2 showers in the ladies toilets and 1 in the mens. The shower head was just resting on the taps so you had to hold the shower head, there were no hooks to hang towels/clothes etc and there was no space to change and no privacy. We both had a shower, popped our shorts on went up to the disabled toilet next to reception to change into our clean clothes as there was more space ad private.|We have had fab holidays in Gran Canaria and stayed in several Servatur complexes and have never had to complain before but this was just the worst experience ever and would never return to Riosol.|If you want an 18-30's holiday with plenty of drinking and rowdiness then this is the best...
Read moreReading other reviews and looking at the overall rating you'd think you should stay away right? When you read reviews saying "it was great but the layout is confusing" and then leave 2 stars you've got to question the mentality of the people leaving the review. Yes when we first got here, finding the room was interesting, they've got separate small apartments that they use with a connecting door to make them bigger for families. Those apartments have a separate number on them. Our room was 5120 and the small room had a number outside of 1020 or something like that. Point is we found it in the end, and once we saw the place in the light of day it all made sense. It's really not hard to understand.
Bugs: Yes we saw cockroaches. Nowhere near as many as you would expect reading the reviews. It's an island and nature is doing its thing. Obviously they can try their best to eliminate them and they probably are. The 2 that found their way into our room were evicted in a cup and enjoyed a base jump to the ground. We also had some flying ants that appeared on the first night too. Again while a bit inconvenient you cannot blame the hotel for this.
Rooms were spotless, the one we were with needed a touch up paint wise. It's just general wear and tear, and you aren't spending Megabucks to be here. We had a sink that didn't drain in one bathroom, which was fixed within around an hour of me reporting it, which was fantastic (although having to physically go to reception as no phones were being answered was a pain). You get a welcome washing up pack, there's some shower gel in dispensers in the bathroom. There's a wireless router for free WiFi which gives an unencrypted wireless signal, so use a VPN, although the network is isolated thankfully. Every room has a view of the bay which is great.
The roof pool area is for All Inclusive Plus people or you can spend a considerable amount to go there if you're not. It wasn't busy whilst we were there and there's no way I'd have paid to go up there especially since it closes at 6. They will probably rethink this as surely it can't be making them money. The pool area for the less well off is perfectly adequate. Although you get the usual entitled self centred people putting their towels on the sunbeds all day, because some human beings are just about themselves. It is against hotel policy to reserve them, but they didn't remove them whilst we were here. They should take a stand on this. Also, due to entitled self serving people, you likely will be disturbed at 3am by people speaking or shouting at full volume if you're a light sleeper. Again you can't blame the hotel for that.
Pillows are weird slim width of the bed jobs which were not comfortable for me. For double beds, at least in our room it was two singles pushed together which came with a gap. The beds are firm but comfortable. There is no air conditioning because the power grid in Gran Canaria would probably fall over if all had it.
Didn't use the hotel restaurants. To be honest it wasn't clear when 'Captain Haddocks' was open. The all inclusive buffet you could go in but felt it cost a bit too much as a one off.
Location wise, you're next to a commercial centre that you can get everything from. To get to the beach (which looks so close from the hotel!) you can either go to the bottom of the hill and go down the many steps, or you can spend at the time of writing €6 on a taxi instead. After going down the steps once, we opted for the taxi, as also at the time of writing I'm fat and unfit. There's great restaurants and bars in the commercial centre, Sanfransico Steakhouse, Jamaica Inn and El Brasero are standouts. There's 2 HiperDino supermarkets that close at 10pm for general supplies and a spar at the bottom of the hill which is slightly more expensive with less range. Over all, as Gran Canaria is an Island the prices aren't cheap for stuff but neither are they outlandish.
I'd definitely stay here again happily. The people who find fault can fork out a bit more perhaps for the luxury they're apparently after at...
Read moreJust got back from Hotel Riosol, we stayed all- inclusive as a family of 3 during the covid-19 pandemic. Can't complain about anything, the view was amazing, nice and high overlooking the rest of puerto rico and the beach and harbour. The lift system is brilliant its a yellow tinted glass elevator and the views going up and down are superb and if you don't like elevators the hotel offers what they call healthy stairs that can take you all around the hotel which is excellent for thise looking to do some exercise. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was great, with much choice for kids and adults, and the staff in there wore masks at all times and ensured the guest's do so too whilst looking around at the food which is great. The staff were always friendly and made sure everyone was satisfied. The hotel itself has its own mini-market but sadly wasn't open due to the pandemic at the moment. The balconys in the hotel vary in size, some are HUGE, and some are very standard size also usuallydependingon what type of room you book (we booked the premium room), ours happened to be the largest balcony they offered it (due to requesting it) and had 2 full size sunbeds on it, a table with 4 chairs, 2 hammocks and a sunshade and chill corner. (of course all with a great view), and still plenty of room left over. If you wish to hang around the pool it had a lovely view and we never had a problem with getting sunbeds after breakfast during the week but be warned that the hotel seems to have an influx of guests during the weekend and it tends to get busy resulting in no sunbeds left once the area opens. We also tried the Island in the stars on 2 occasions only due to the hotel not being busy enough on weekdays due to the pandemic, its quieter up their for sun bathing and there are a variety of beds/sunbeds to choose from which each have a head rest and the 3 pool areas up there were magnificent, there was an ordinary pool as well as a hot springs in the upper area of the VIP and a water sunbed area that has a astonishing view into the ocean, you get a glass of cava shortly after arrival aswell as occasional snacks in the day (fruit and Bombay mix), its a little more exclusive and definatly worth a try for €10 per day, beach towels are also included with that. Be warned however that children under 7 arent allowed into the vip area. The beach isnt overly far but theres alot of steps to walk down to get there, around 700, there are 2 close by beaches, the one you can see, and Amadores is 1020m away from that, but is a lovely walk down the coast. A taxi from the beach back to the Riosol is around €4 or a good effort to walk the steps back up. Cant say much about the shops as most were closed other than the Spar near by which was handy for getting anything like suncream. There is also a doctor and pharmacy near-by incase you need anything medical related. The room we had was fantastic, certainy enough to self cater if you wanted to save money. The room was excellent and was fully-equipped with modern and comfortable decor both indoors and outside. Bedroom with had 2 single beds which were decently comfortable as well as a safe in the wardrobe thats free to use, bathroom with shower, hairdryer, magnifying mirror, bathrooms and pool towels. Living room with an armchair and a sofa bed as well as a Flatscrean TV and air conditioning which is useful during the hot nights. Wi-Fi was brilliant and stretchered through the whole hotel and the kitchen was an open-plan equipped with microwave, electric coffee-maker, toaster, ceramic hob and fridge, certainy enough to self cater if you wanted to save money. The room was kept clean and well all week and the cleaners always did an excellent job. Overall we thought our stay was amazing would reccommended it to any and everyone looking to go, we will...
