We stayed at the RMGH in November and I've waited to write a review since we had a bad experience leaving the hotel that colored my opinion for awhile.
The double room is too small for two people. There is no desk, just a built-in, immovable sort of ledge with a built-in bench. So doing any work, or sharing that tiny space is tough. I looked in other rooms (the hotel was fully booked so it was too late to try to upgrade) and they had more space and more light. If two of you go, I could not recommend the double room - it was just too too cramped.
The staff was great and they had terrific recommendations for food and bars and nightlife. They were very helping in making reservations and assisting in understanding the tangle of streets that is San Sebastian.
The location is really great. Right next to everything, but not in the middle of it. So you had quiet nights, but less than a 15 minute walk to all the tapas your heart could desire.
Parking is complicated. There is no parking and you must find your way to the parking garages and back again. It had never occured to me that this would be the case, so be forewarned. It's a little challenging to get to the hotel (we never quite made it, we parked around the corner) but they found us and helped us with our luggage. Then they gave us directions to parking garages - ours was about 6 blocks away. And, when you leave, if you are a US Credit Card holder, you cannot pay to get out. You must find a machine and pay the machine to get a chit to get out. I realize this must sound confusing, but I don't want you to be in line, with 10 cars behind you, when you realize that the arm won't go up because it won't accept your CC. I don't know that any of the upscale hotels in SS have parking, it had not occurred to me to check beforehand.
Breakfast was great and the self-service setup was fine with us. They have those amazing coffee-making machines so you could have as many cappuccinos as you desired.
Their bar and restaurant were also really good and it was a very popular place with locals and tourists.
We checked out in sheeting rain and since the car was so far away we thought the hotel would have some ideas for what we should do. But no. No giving us umbrellas either, since they needed them for guests. It was not their finest hour, and I was assured by their manager that they'd put more thought into how to assist guests who get caught in this...
Read moreWow! We had no expectations coming to San Sebastian and Room Mate Gorka, however we left with such a wonderful memory(s). First off Room Mate Gorka! Service was amazing, staff super friendly, helpful and super attentive. We cannot recommend this hotel enough! From the start at the front desk ( we apologize but believe the super friendly woman was named Veronica? this past Saturday) attentive, friendly, knowledgable and very warm and inviting! Some Hotels can be very quick and shrewd, NOT here! Thank you Veronica! From actually walking out side to show us where to park from suggesting favorite Pincho Taverna's to all around warm smile! Great location! Short walk to Old Town and beaches. We stopped by Room Mate Gorka bar for a quick glass of wine before our siesta and ended up having a wonderful time conversing with Jon ( who looks like Bruce Springsteen) and kindly had the kitchen open up a little early for a few pinchos!, Javier, and Fernando! Service was amazing, friendly and we loved the lively conversation! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and had a wonderful pre dinner time! From suggestions of nearby villages to visit, to the history of the Basque people and region! If you are nearby stop in for a drink and some great service and conversation! Muchas Gracias Room Mate Gorka and staff! We would recommend to anyone!! If we could give more than 5 stars we would!!...
Read moreLocation was fantastic, within walking distance of La Concha Beach and the old town. That’s the thing about this hotel that I liked.||Nice park in front of the hotel but there are also 2 bus stops right in front of the hotel. Really noisy right from the early morning to late at night. Sound proofing is bad; not only noise from the street, but also footsteps of guest(s) from the room(s) above, although fortunately the latter lasts only a few seconds each time for several times each night until the guest(s) upstairs settle down to bed.||Surprised by the high rating and ranking in TripAdvisor. Room is tiny. Bath towels are on a rack above the toilet bowl which I find unpleasant. Didn’t like the papaya scented body lotion. Bottle of water is not sealed and I wasn’t confident enough to drink it - could well have been filled with tap water by housekeeping, who knows?||Front desk staff are helpful and polite especially a lady named Kati Heino who was very prompt, warm and helpful.||So in a nutshell, I liked the location and front desk staff. I didn’t like everything else. Considered if I would give this a 2 or 3 rating and decided, on account of the location and Kati, to...
