We stayed in a bungalow at the Viking Holiday Resort for about a week in November 2024, and it definitely did not disappoint.
The room had air-conditioning, a lifesaver if you're not use to the heat and humidity of Thailand.
The medium sized fridge has a freezer section and as a whole large enough to hold your drinks and snacks from the trusty 7 Eleven in town.
The bathroom has your standard shower, toilet and basin combo.
The bungalow was neat and clean, basic but perfect if you're not planning on staying indoors much.
I only subtracted a star due to the bed's mattress being a bit harder than I prefer, but it wasn't too uncomfortable.
For those who want a bit more luxury, I believe there are new family-sized units available. From what I could see they have a living area, separate rooms and balcony/ veranda with a sea view.
The restaurant is open from 07h00 to 17h00 and serves traditional Thai and Western meals. I believe they do a buffet breakfast during the busy season. I can recommend the fried garlic and pork with fried rice for lunch - it'll keep you the entire day.
The resort has some essentials for sale during the day, potato chips, soft drinks, beer, wine spritzers and of course mosquito repellant. You can borrow the resort's diving masks, snorkels and pool floaties.
The resort is right on the beach with ample beach chairs and umbrellas. Do yourself the favour and enjoy a beer under the palm trees whilst gently swaying in the hammock.
We went to the neighboring resorts for dinner (Apache Loongdum and Sangthian Beach Resort), both a 5 minute walk from the resort. I recommend Sangthian, they had delicious food and a free fire show in the evenings.
Getting around on the island is easy. You have a choice of private taxis or the shared pick-up truck taxis (Songthaews). There is a taxi stand at Sangthian Beach Resort. The shared taxis rotate throughout the island each hour, starting at 08h30 and ending at 18h00. For the adventurous at heart, rent a scooter. For 400 THB, you can rent one for the day and zip around the island without waiting for taxis. You can enquire about the scooters and taxis at the resort, they arranged our scooter for drop-off and pick-up at the resort.
If you are looking for a relaxed breakaway to an island where you aren't trampled by tourists, Ko Samet is the place to go, with Viking Holiday Resort being ideal for solo-travelers, couples and families alike.
BIG thank you to the two ladies who manage the resort, you were amazing and made our...
Read moreWe recently stayed at a bungalow resort on an island, and I have mixed feelings about my experience. On the positive side, the manager was exceptionally kind and helpful throughout my stay. The location of the resort was truly breathtaking, with bungalows nestled right by the sea under swaying palm trees.
One of the standout features of this place was its cleanliness; the Cambodian staff worked tirelessly to keep everything spotless. I also had the pleasure of enjoying the most delicious mango smoothie of my entire trip here.
However, when it comes to the accommodations, I was a bit disappointed. The rooms were rather basic and didn't quite live up to the price we paid. Thankfully, the stunning beach and surroundings somewhat made up for this.
I should also mention that my initial experience with breakfast on the first day was a complete letdown (look at the pictures). It left much to be desired. However, things improved significantly from the second day onwards when we discovered the Thai breakfast option, which was quite satisfying. It's a shame that the first morning didn't meet our expectations, but at least we found a better option to enjoy during the rest of our stay.
My biggest gripe during my stay was the constant noise due to ongoing renovation work. It would have been helpful if they had either not rented out rooms during this time or at least warned guests in advance.
Overall, the bungalow resort had its merits, such as the beautiful location and the attentive manager, but the room quality and the noise from renovations left room for...
Read moreHesitant to tell people about this place. This whole strip of beach is some of the best on Koh Samet and people don't seem to realize it. ||||The manager of Viking is just so awesome. Sweet, genuine, kind, honest. Makes such a difference when a good person is in charge. She took my phone call when I could not book online and her English was great. She let us book for that night while we were in a cab on the way to the island. Once we arrived, we had an amazing lunch then booked into our beachfront rooms at a great price. ||||I really hope that people check the dates on the negative reviews of this place. Most of them are from many years ago. 2013 even. This manager took over in 2014 and started with a bit of a mess, apparently. But she has worked really hard to maintain a really high standard of service, cleanliness, food quality, and hotel appearance. The place is just adorable. ||||The breakfast is not a fancy buffet, just a simple plate of food, but it is okay, a fine start to the day. The only thing I really would love to see fixed is the entrance, it is a rocky, muddy slide down a steep hill, hard to climb up, dangerous to walk down and taxis always complain and refuse to drop you off at the hotel entrance because of it. ||||Honestly, for the price, the location, and the people, this place still gets 5 stars from me even though it is not perfect, it is very charming and my favourite place to stay (Note, I have stayed at 5 different hotels on Koh Samet, even some much...
