So, I’m a fair person and my reviews demonstrate that. Kapok is one of the few locally owned hotels on this beautiful island that offers comfortable accommodations, a great location, a warm staff (the one star service rating is specifically for this incident), and great food. If you are a lover of boutique hotels that provides an authentic local experience this is the place to come. Just Do Not Get Hurt On Their Property.
This is my third time frequenting this establishment and I’ve recommended them many times to friends visiting from abroad, so it hurts my heart to say that I Will Never Return. I, along with my mother and two children checked in late after arriving at the airport. The night clerk attended to us and was very caring and accommodating as expected. We settled into our room which we booked for 8 nights and proceeded to get cleaned up and unwind. As my mother stepped into the shower she slipped and fell hurting herself pretty badly. There was no anti slip mat in the shower. She incurred multiple bruises and a busted lip. When informed of the incident , the night clerk offered to transport her to general hospital. In the moment, after such a long day she declined ( general hospital in Tt is not a place that you want to go). When we got up the next morning she was in severe pain and had swelling and bruising. The head of security, Mr. James came to take a report and pictures as the night clerk must have informed them about the incident. Mr. James was kind and courteous. The room attendant also came and reactively put an anti slip mat in the shower as per instructions from management . However, after that things went downhill. The general manager, Jean Luke, informed us that he could call a doctor to evaluate my mother at an additional cost. When that was challenged, he shared that they would cover the doctor’s visit, but only if she signed a waiver stating that the hotel was not responsible for her fall first. He went on to make excuses, stating that their policy is to only put mats in tubs as they have never had a slip and fall incident in a shower before. He went further, adding that accidents happen, so we should just sign the waiver, see the doctor, and move on. The management team and owners of this facility had no regard or concern for a paying guest that was injured due to their negligence. Instead, of doing everything in their power to make her feel comfortable and pray that they make up for her bad experience and keep a repeat customer, they added insult to injury and treated us like common scammers who wanted money out of them. Jean Luke actually had the audacity to explain to me that “People try to scam them all the time”. They were more concerned with protecting themselves from liability than anything else.
The experience was disrespectful, disappointing, and prejudiced. Even though I was raised and live in America, I present as a local. They did not value me or my business and that was made very clear. We Did Not Sign Anything, packed our bags, paid our bill and checked out of their facilities and into a different well-established hotel. I was able to pay a private doctor to evaluate my mother. Kapok owners/representatives revealed their poor business ethics and lack of moral compass and basically said well too bad. They were not in the least concerned about my mother’s well- being nor were they concerned that they were losing repeat...
Read moreI had a stayed for Quarantine. With the management and work of Wendy, Ken, Joseph, and cleaning staff, Kapok is poised to have a bright future. I especially want to sing the praises of Wendy whose service and management skills really stood out.
The Staff: The staff was very warm and welcoming. They made sure my needs were met at all times ensuring that I would not miss a meal. Room service was almost instant and if I ever had additional requests, of which I had many, they were always met with a cheerful voice and expedient service. There were law changes during my stay and they refunded me money without a second word. During Covid times where businesses are struggling, they never second guessed their great service and that has garnered my respect.
Room: The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. I had a simple room without a balcony. The beds were very comfortable & the bathroom- beautiful. The shower pressure & water always remained steaming hot. The internet is highspeed and available throughout the hotel. With 2 restaurants conveniently located within the hotel, a variety of food was always a quick call away. The rooms are cooled to a perfect temperature to match the bedding available. You will not be too warm or too cold.
Location: It's in the heart of Port of Spain very near to absolutely everything. The beach, clubbing, the avenue, bars, the savannah, food places. You honestly couldnt find a better location.
Where to improve: In quarantine, the bathrooms do not have a toilet wand to clean after yourself. I do not know if this is also true for the non-quarantine bathrooms. I cannot say much else besides this.
I would highly recommend this as a place to stay on a business trip, anniversary, to host an event or spend a night with a...
Read moreI was in town for Carnival 2023 and spent most of the week staying with a friend who grew up in POS. I decided to stay at a hotel for my final two days in Trinidad to cap off my week with a little extra comfort. Bad mistake. Kapok Hotel turned out to be a bad last impression for an otherwise incredible trip. The hallway outside my room had a moldy, rotten, nauseating stench. Housekeeping must have been aware of this as I noticed them shampooing the carpet, but then they left an extremely loud, industrial air dryer blowing right outside my door all day until 10pm. And after all their efforts, they still didn’t get rid of the smell. The complementary breakfast was mediocre if you can get any. I arrived for breakfast at 930am (it’s supposed to go until 10am) and by then the food was basically empty and refills were taking forever. Despite having a “Do Not Disturb” sign hanging on the outside of my door, housekeeping bothered me anyway. Apparently their housekeeping schedule had incorrectly indicated I was checking out that day (I wasn’t). And on another morning, my privacy continued to be disturbed as maintenance staff were noisily working right outside my window to fix a neighboring AC unit. I normally wouldn’t complain about these things if it wasn’t for the exorbitant prices (nearly $200 USD including taxes per night). Reading the other reviews here, it’s quite possible they have their act more together outside of Carnival week, but my message to hotel management is: Please do not charge 4 star hotel prices for 1, maybe 2 star service. It’s shameful. And all of this is unfortunate because individually, the staff was otherwise very helpful...
